Van Pelt wins in Malaysia

Bo Van Pelt saved his best for last at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic. The Richmond, Ind. native out-dueled fellow Hoosier Jeff Overton in the final pairing for a six-shot victory Sunday. Van Pelt’s 64 was his second 7-under round of the week, but his first bogey-free mark. The 36-year-old played his last 34 holes at The MINES Resort in 13 under, reaching a tournament-record 23-under count for the week. Overton, the 2005 Big 10 champion while playing at the University of Indiana, had three bogeys in a 2-under 69 that left him six shots behind Van Pelt.

Van Pelt leads after 54 holes

It's going to be a very Hoosier final pairing Sunday in Malaysia. Bo Van Pelt birdied holes 15, 16 and 17 Saturday at The MINES Resort to take a one-shot lead over another Indiana native, Jeff Overton, after 54 holes at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic. Van Pelt’s 4-under 67 was his highest score of the week but was enough to leapfrog Overton (69) and leave him 18 holes away from his first victory since 2009. After bogeying his first two holes Saturday, Van Pelt got back to even before the turn. He added a birdie on No. 12 before his trio of late birdies put him ahead by two shots. Overton got his first closing birdie of the week to narrow the deficit to one shot at day’s end. "I’ve been in this position before and I’ve been playing this game a long time, and I just didn’t make that big a deal about (the early bogeys)," Van Pelt said. "I knew there was a lot of golf left. I made two good swings on 3 and made an easy birdie there and just kind of righted the ship." Mark Wilson and 36-hole co-leader Fredrik Jacobson are at 13 under, three behind Van Pelt.
