Hole 14: Donald, Kaymer halve with pars

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

  No. 14      par 4       449 yards

Donald hit his drive into the left rough, short of the fairway bunker. The ball settled 268 yards out and left him with 166 to the green.

Kaymer’s drive went straight down the middle of the fairway, 24 yards further than Donald’s tee shot. He had 143 yards to the green and what appeared to be the advantage.

Kaymer’s second shot found the right edge of the green and stopped 27 feet, 2 inches from the pin so he would putt first. It was an uphill putt, so he gave it a good rap and sent it 6 feet by the hole.

Donald was just off the putting  surface, 19 feet from the pin. He pitched it into the slope and the ball went 3 feet, 7 inches past the hole.

Kaymer’s par putt was all downhill but he made it. He conceded Donald’s par effort so the match remains 2 up.

CONSOLATION MATCH: Kuchar and Watson halved the 15th hole with pars so Kuchar is still 2 up.

Hole 13: Birdies for both

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

No. 13 Par 5 583 yards

Luke Donald rips his drive 293 yards and is down the middle of the fairway. He’s 281 yards from the tee.

Martin Kaymer follows with a huge tee shot, 318 yards away and safely to the right of the fairway bunker. He’s 258 yards away and will have a go at the green.

Donald’s second shot with a fairway metal is headed toward the green but falls just short and left, 89 feet from the pin.

Kaymer’s shot isn’t short. He strikes it and immediately starts walking up the fairway, obviously pleased. His ball lands on the green and he’ll have a 36-foot, 2-inch putt for eagle.

Donald calls on his short game and comes through again. His chip rolls to within 4-1/2 feet of the pin.

Kaymer can now win the hole with an eagle. But his putt, while online, come up short three feet short. He rolls in the birdie putt.

Donald follows with his own birdie putt to halve the match. Two nice birdies for both. Donald remains 2 up.

CONSOLATION UPDATE: Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson are both stringing together pars, which is just fine for Kuchar. He’s 2 up through 14 holes.

Hole 12: Donald extends his lead

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

No. 12 Par 3 219 yards

How quickly momentum turns. After regaining the lead, Luke Donald hits first off the 12th – and it’s a solid shot, landing safely on the green and funnels off the left, 27 feet from the pin.

Kaymer follows, strikes his ball … and is immediately turns away. The ball is lost to the right and sails into the greenside bunker. He’s facing a tough shot, with little green to work with.

Kaymer’s bunker shot rolls well past the pin and settles nearly 19 feet away.

Donald lines up over his birdie putt with a clear advantage. But he offers too much muscle and the ball rolls past the hole, leaving him 4 feet, 2 inches for his par.

Kaymer follows with a worse result. His par putt is driven well past the pin, 6 feet, 2 inches away. He’s got to be disappointed with that effort. He rolls in the bogey putt and must hope Donald misses.

But the Englishman doesn’t. He calmly rolls in his par putt to win the hole. He’s now 2 up with six holes to play.

CONSOLATION FINAL: Matt Kuchar remains 2 up on Bubba Watson after they each made par at the 13th.

10:03 PM

Hole 11: Donald regains the lead

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

No. 11 Par 5 601 yards

Martin Kaymer’s drive finds the middle of the fairway, but it’s short. His ball lands 54 yards shorter than it did in his semifinals win against Bubba Watson. It’s just 279 yards, which leaves him 317 yards from the pin.

Luke Donald’s drive is even shorter, at 275 yards, but just behind Kaymer’s ball in the fairway.

With his second shot, Donald lays up, 93 yards from the pin. Kaymer follows and lays up 118 yards from the pin. Did Kaymer want to hit first on their next shots? Could be a little gamesmanship here.

Either way, it’s the right move for Kaymer. His approach shot is terrific, finishing 5 feet, 4 inches from the pin.

Donald’s approach lands past the pin but spins back. Another quality shot – 7 feet, 8 inches from the pin.

Donald drills his birdie putt. Kaymer needs to make his to halve the hole. But his putt slides by on the right. He’ll settle for par, and Donald regains the lead. He’s now 1 up.

That short missed birdie putt may very well come back to haunt the German.

CONSOLATION UPDATE: Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson have parred the 11th and 12th holes, and Kuchar retains his 2 up advantage.

9:47 PM

Hole 10: Donald gets up and down

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

No. 10 Par 4 472 yards

Martin Kaymer has grabbed the momentum in this match, having won three of the past four holes. He hangs his ball out to the right but the ball finds the fairway and comes up short of the bunkers on the right side. He’s 186 yards from the pin.

How will Donald respond after his first real stretch of adversity this week? Still shaky. His tee shot finds the bunker on the left side. It’s a decent lie but his feet are ever so slightly above the ball. He needs something positive to happen quickly.

But his approach shot comes up short of the green and finds the bunker.

Kaymer’s approach sails past the pin but safely on the green, inside 25 feet.

Donald’s chip is an excellent one; he’ll save par with a tap-in.

With a chance to take the lead, Kaymer’s birdie slides just to the right. Donald concedes the par putt and the match remains all square.

CONSOLATION UPDATE: Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson each parred the par-5 10th. Kuchar remains 2 up.

9:33 PM

Hole 9: Kaymer’s rally complete

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

No. 9 Par 4 471 yards

Having won two of the last three holes, Kaymer opts to play it safe with a hybrid, hitting his tee shot 231 yards but perfectly placed on the fairway. He’s 238 yards away from the pin.

Donald opts for driver. His ball just skirts past the bunker, a drive of 273 yards. He’s in the fairway, 219 yards from the pin.

Kaymer’s approach shot lands well left of the green at this hole, one of the toughest ones on the course with a narrow corridor toward the pin. The ball is 77 feet from the pin in the native area, with a bush behind the ball. He’s got a tough chip but has plenty of green to work with.

Donald’s approach is disappointing as well. His ball is short and left and in the desert -- one of the first mis-hits we’ve seen from Donald all week. The ball ends up under some brush. Donald picks up his ball and heads back down the fairway, where he will take a penalty stroke and hit his fourth shot from his original position.

Now 220 yards from the pin, Donald hits his fourth shot and it lands in the primary rough to the right of the green.

Kaymer chips out of the dirt and barely rolls his ball on the green. He’ll be putting for par from 40 feet, 6 inches.

Donald’s chip shot, his fifth, lands 10 feet from the pin. He has that for double bogey.

Donald misses his putt and picks up, conceding the hole to Kaymer. It was a messy hole for both players, but an effective one for Kaymer. He’s come all the way back to even the match at the turn.

CONSOLATION UPDATE: Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson each had issues at the 10th, posting double bogeys. Kuchar remains 2 up.

9:12 PM

Hole 8: Kaymer’s comeback continues

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

No. 8 Par 5 548 yards

Kaymer’s drive is 280 yards down the middle of the fairway. He’s 275 yards from the pin. Kaymer needs to keep putting pressure on Donald, but he hasn’t birdied this hole since the second round.

Donald’s drive finds the fairway bunker 258 yards away. He’s 279 yards from the pin.

Donald has to lay up and his second shot is 86 yards from the pin. If Kaymer can find the green in two, he will have a huge advantage.

But he doesn’t. The German’s approach shot lands short and in the grass to the right of the green. Looks like he’ll be chipping from 36 feet away.

Donald’s third shot lands past the pin but not too far. He’s on a ridge, looking at a downhill birdie putt from 17 feet, 2 inches.

The grass wasn’t too deep where Kaymer’s ball landed, so he opts to putt. He knocks his eagle attempt to within 5 feet.

Donald’s birdie putt never had a chance, and he’s 4 feet away. It’s only the second time all week he’s had to settle for par on this hole.

Kaymer has a chance to win the hole. He does by rolling in his birdie putt. He’s now 1 down to Donald.

CONSOLATION UPDATE: Matt Kuchar rolled in a putt from 53 feet for birdie at the ninth and is now 2 up on Bubba Watson.

8:55 PM

Hole 7: Conceded par putts

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

No. 7 Par 4 474 yards

Now with momentum, Kaymer has the honors for the first time in the match. He lashes a 303-yard drive in the middle of the fairway. Donald’s drive actual is longer – 306 yards – but it lands in the rough to the left of the fairway. That leaves him farther away from the pin – 181 yards to Kaymer’s 166 yards.

Donald’s shot is a good one – pin-high, 27 feet, 6 inches from the pin.

Kaymer changes clubs twice before hitting his approach shot. The ball sails past the pin and takes a big hop, finishing near the back edge of the fringe. He’s 62 feet from the pin – not a great shot.

Kaymer’s long birdie attempt comes up three feet short of the pin. Donald’s putt is even closer.

They concede both par putts. Donald remains 2 up.

CONSOLATION UPDATE: Matt Kuchar and Bubba Watson have halved the last three holes. Kuchar remains 1 up through 8.

8:41 PM

Hole 6: Kaymer wins his first hole

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer.

No. 6 Par 3 193 yards

Donald’s tee shot finds the green but well short of the pin and rolls to the edge of the fringe. He’ll be able to putt, but he’s 56 feet, 5 inches from the pin.

Kaymer, needing to make something happen, pulls a 7-iron. But his tee shot drifts to the right and settles into the primary rough. He’s 42 feet, 10 inches from the pin, closer than Donald. But he won’t be putting. That wasn’t the tee shot he was looking for.

Donald’s putt comes up 10 feet short of the pin, leaving him a longish putt to save par.

Kaymer’s chip rolls past the pin, 7 feet, 3 inches away.

Donald’s putt slips by to the right. He has to settle for bogey. It’s just his fifth bogey all week.

Kaymer can cut the lead if he rolls in his par putt. He desperately needs something positive to happen … and he gets it. The ball spins three-quarters around the edge of the cup but it drops. Kaymer is now just 2 down.

CONSOLATION FINALS: Matt Kuchar remains 1 up in his match against Bubba Watson through seven holes.

8:37 PM

Hole 5: Donald wins second straight

MARANA, Ariz. – Hole-by-hole coverage from the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play final between Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer:

  No. 5         Par 4        494 yards

Donald’s tee shot landed in the first cut on the left side of the fairway, traveling 281 yards and stopping just short of the fairway bunker. He had 204 yards to the flag.

Kaymer pulled his drive left and it landed in a bush. He had to take an unplayable lie, dropping on the wet sand beside a cart path. Kaymer had 247 yards to the pin.

Kaymer’s hybrid landed short of the green, about 100 feet from the pin. Donald’s second shot found the left greenside bunker.

Kaymer chipped to 15 feet, 2 inches while Donald blasted out to 5 feet, 6 inches. Kaymer proceeded to make his putt for bogey so Donald had to hole his for the win.

As he has done so many times this week, Donald made the putt to win his third straight hole. Donald leads 3 up.

CONSOLATION MATCH: The two halved the seventh hole with pars so Kuchar is still 1 up.
