Watney takes control in Malaysia

Watney birdies No. 12 at CIMB Classic

Nick Watney hits his approach shot to 4 feet on the par-4 12th hole and sinks the birdie putt.

Nick Watney has racked up nine birdies through 15 holes and opened up a two-shot lead over Tiger Woods, Bo Van Pelt and Chris Kirk at the CIMB Classic. Currently 21 under, Watney needs to go 3 under on the last three holes to shoot 59 at The MINES Resort. Woods is 8 under through 17 holes in his final round while Kirk and Van Pelt are 4 and 3 under respectively. Van Pelt, who is paired with Robert Garrigus (-18) may be the biggest threat to Watney. The defending champion has six holes to break out of his current six-hole birdie drought.

Piercy takes off after battling jet lag

By Chris Reimer, PGA TOUR staff KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Scott Piercy opened the CIMB Classic with a disappointing 75 and was tied for last place following the first round. Piercy admitted he wasn't hitting the ball well that day, but suggested that traveling overseas for the first time in his life and learning to deal with the effects of jet lag might have had something to do with his 4-over round. "I had a little trouble trying to figure out what my body was feeling. I woke up in the morning and up for a couple hours and the clock says 8 in the morning, but my body felt like it was 5 at night," said Piercy, who won the RBC Canadian Open earlier this year. "I figured something out in my swing that helped and as the week went along it got better. I got confident the more I saw the ball going in the hole and the more I saw the ball going where I was looking." Following his 75, Piercy went right back out to the driving range on Thursday despite the high temperatures and think humidity. The work paid off as he battled back with improving scores each day. Piercy shot 68 and 64 in the second and third rounds, respectively. A course record-tying 62 in the final round moved Piercy into the top 10 at 15 under. "I hit 18 greens today and could have even shot four or five strokes better, easily. I think it was a combination of swinging it poorly, jet lag, understanding the course. I found a good swing thought, learned to trust it out there, got acclimated to the time change and it all came together today," Piercy said. "I probably won't win the golf tournament. You never want to come over here and finish last. I like it over here and can't wait to come back."

Piercy, 33, opened with five birdies on his first nine holes in his final round at the MINES Resort and Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, to move into the top 10. He has 15 birdies and an eagle in his past 36 holes, having carded a 64 in the third round. Piercy opened with rounds of 75-68, keeping him from serious contention. Toms places second

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- David Toms has quietly amassed an impressive season. Toms carded a final-round 63 to place second with a 15 under total on Sunday at The McGladrey Classic -- his fifth top 10 of 2012. "I wasn't expecting much," Toms said. "I'd just taken off seven weeks and I wasn't expecting much at all. But I came here, I love it here in Sea Island, like the golf course a lot. And I felt like I could play well." Toms tied for third here in 2010. This year, Toms tied for fourth at the U.S. Open and tied for sixth at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation. He also had a T8 at the Bridgestone Invitational.

Furyk comes up short again

Birdie on 15

Jim Furyk makes a birdie at the par-5 15th at The McGladrey Classic on Sunday.

By Bill Cooney, PGATOUR.COM ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Depending on perspective, Jim Furyk has either had a very good season or a very disappointing one. Furyk is as hard on himself as anyone, so he would likely choose the latter. Furyk entered the final round of The McGladrey Classic tied for the lead with Davis Love III, and carded a respectable final-round 69 to finish third. He was one shot back, needing a birdie on one of the final three holes to catch eventual champion Tommy Gainey. Furyk made par on the 16th, saved par from 13 feet on 17 and pushed his approach right from the middle of the fairway on No. 18, leading to a bogey. "You know, I'm disappointed," said Furyk, who has lost a number of leads this season. "I did battle. I think at times it's probably a little harder, you see the first guy to post, it's harder to chase that score when it's already in when we're on the sixth hole." Furyk finished second at the Transitions Championship, lost the U.S. Open after being tied for the lead after 69 holes, double-bogeyed the 72nd hole to lose the Bridgestone Invitational to Keegan Bradley, and bogeyed his final two holes to lose his singles match at the Ryder Cup to Sergio Garcia. Regardless, Furyk is working on an impressive season. He's had eight top 10s, and has a lower scoring average (69.3 to 69.8) than he had during his remarkable 2010 season.
