One-and-done: Northern Trust Open

By Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy Insider

In a week like this, I could have written a second Power Rankings the field is so deep at the Northern Trust Open. Consider that none of the following cracked the top 15: Matt Kuchar, Luke Donald, Charles Howell III, Ernie Els, Webb Simpson, Lee Westwood, Hunter Mahan, Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell, K.J. Choi, Padraig Harrington, Scott Piercy and Peter Hanson.

As it relates to plugging in a one-and-done, I'll reserve my one mulligan on defending champions, so that eliminates Bill Haas. And as much as I love Ryan Moore's possibilities this week, I'm holstering him for later as well.

The pick instead is Jimmy Walker.

My goal in the one-and-done format is to secure a top 10. That may seem underachieving, but many of those top 10s will be top 5s or perhaps a win or two or three.

Walker's wife is due to deliver the couple's second child shortly after the conclusion of the tournament, and they've wanted to sneak this event before the birth. That creates a dynamic that should be highly motivating for a guy already hitting on all cylinders.

In fact, you could draw a comparison to Moore's rise in the FedExCup Playoffs and eventual victory in Las Vegas last fall before the birth of his first child.

Walker, Estes set early pace

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Everyone has teed off in the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am but no one is going extremely low.

A pair of Texans, Bob Estes and Jimmy Walker, are leading at 3 under. Estes has played six holes at Spyglass while Walker is through three at Monterey Peninsula, starting on the back nine and making an eagle at the 10th hole and a birdie at No. 11.

Estes is playing in his second event of the season after tying for 16th at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation. On the other hand, the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am is Walker's fifth straight start with his best finish a tie for fourth at the Farmers Insurance Open.

A group of nine players are tied at 2 under, including Patrick Reed, Brendon Todd, Peter Tomasulo, Joe Durant, Seung-yul Noh, Lee Williams, Greg Owen, Kelly Kraft and Web.com Tour Player of the Year, Casey Wittenberg.

The skies are cloudy and scattered showers are expected to move in at midday. Another low pressure system enters the area overnight and brings a better chance of showers -- and possibly thunderstorms accompanied by hail -- for Friday.

Update: Walker eagles No. 9

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Jimmy Walker has just eagled the ninth hole on the North Course to take sole possession of the lead during the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

Walker birdied the first hole, which is also a par 5, and picked up a birdie at the seventh hole to turn in 4 under. He's one shot ahead of Nicolas Thompson, Bryce Molder, Martin Flores, Luke List and defending champ Brandt Snedeker.

Of that group only Flores is playing the South Course.

The group at 2 under includes 17 players, including major champions Vijay Singh and Trevor Immelman, as well as Scott Stallings, who narrowly missed the playoff on Sunday at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation when he hit his second shot on the 72nd hole in the water and made bogey.

Tiger Woods, a six-time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open, rolled in a 25-footer for birdie on his first hole and remains 1 under through three. Phil Mickelson is even through eight after two birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Woods is playing the South Course while Mickelson is on the North.

MORE TOP 100: Back to No. 42 | Forward to No. 40 | T op 100 archive

2013 PREVIEW: If Jimmy Walker can start putting four rounds together, that elusive first victory may become reality in 2013. He only had one tournament last year where he shot four rounds in the 60s but he did improve from 50th to 16th in strokes-gained putting, though, so that's another positive.

2012 DEFINING MOMENT: His third tie for fourth of the season, and his sixth top-10 of the year, came at the Frys.com Open where Walker fired a career-low-tying 62 on Sunday. His other ties for fourth came at the Northern Trust Open, on Walker's favorite course, and the Wyndham Championship, where he held the second-round lead after another 62. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: Jimmy had a chance to win the Frys.com Open with a final-round 62 that eventually resulted in a fourth-place finish. He is a very good putter, which leads to consistent play. At one point this year, Walker made nine cuts in a row. He played in 28 events and made an impressive 23 cuts. That's a lot of tournaments entered and a lot of paychecks cashed. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio

BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: Gamers lather in great putters that play a ton. Turns 34 in January and sets up as a very mild bargain in salary games at $1.638 million even though that was a career high. Forever injury prone, he's figured out how to play through and schedule around discomfort. Survived a lofty 23 cuts in 2012, seven more than in any of his previous five years on the PGA TOUR. Also posted a personal-best six top 10s in a career-high 28 starts, including in both appearances in the Fall Series. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

Can Walker, Petrovic post a winner?

With a birdie 2 on the seventh hole (his 16th), Jimmy Walker moved to 9 under in his final round and grabbed a share of the lead at 14 under at the Frys.com Open.
