Heath Slocum finished No. 124 in the FedExCup standings.

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It wasn't easy but Heath Slocum has played his way into the FedExCup Playoffs with a tie for 32nd at the Wyndham Championship.

Slocum moved from 128th to 124th, displacing Jhonattan Vegas. He is the only player who started the week outside the top 125 to punch his ticket for The Barclays, which begins its 72-hole run at Bethpage Black on Thursday.

Slocum was projected No. 120 when he came back to the 14th tee at Sedgefield on Monday morning to resume his final round. He came up short on the 475-yard par 4 in two, chipped up and three-putted from six feet for an inauspicious double bogey. He dropped to 123rd in the projections, as a result, and stayed there when he bogeyed the 16th hole.

Slocum came up short again at the 18th hole, chipped on and missed a 6-footer to save par. Even so, he only dropped one spot to No. 124 to solidify his spot in the Playoffs.

"I really thought I probably need a par at the last and then when I missed that,  I was like, I mean -- obviously they're all important," Slocum said. "I'm trying to make them not only to improve my standings to maybe get in The Playoffs but every little point helps, every little dollar helps. As soon as I saw you guys start inching around, I knew it was getting close."

In 2009 Slocum missed the cut at the Wyndham Championship and had to wait anxiously on Sunday to see if he remained in the top 125. He did -- by two points -- and ended up winning The Barclays. He went on to finish eighth in the FedExCup that year.

"I think I've been playing a little better lately," Slocum said. "I'm going to take that away as encouraging. Kind of just take the finish and just put it aside. I have life next week. I've been there before. It's a course I've played before.

"And, like I said, my game really does feel like it's kind of rounding out, getting a little more consistent. The putter is starting to feel better. I didn't make anything today. Kind of dreadful. Again, I'm just happy to move on at this point."

Slocum drops in FedExCup projections

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Heath Slocum didn’t get off to a good start on Monday morning at the Wyndham Championship.

He has just double-bogeyed the 14th hole – coming up short of the green at the par-4 14th and three-putting from 6 feet. As a result, Slocum, who started the week ranked 128th in the FedExCup, was 120th after the resumption and has now fallen to 123rd.

At the start of the final round, Slocum was the only player projected to move inside the top 125.

Slocum fighting for Playoffs life

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Heath Slocum missed the cut at the Wyndham Championship three years ago and  spent Sunday anxiously waiting to see whether he remained in the top 125 of the FedExCup standings.

Slocum Turns out, by a narrow two-point margin, Slocum did. And then he went on to win The Barclays and finish eighth in the FedExCup.

This year, Slocum isn’t leaving anything to chance. He started the week ranked 128th and needed to play well earn a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs.

And so far, Slocum has -- making four birdies in his first 12 holes to move to 9 under for the tournament. Right now, the four-time PGA TOUR champ is projected at No. 120 in the FedExCup – currently the only player moving inside.

Slocum finding form, closes with 66

Heath Slocum has much to build on after this week at Sea Island.
By Chris Dunham, PGATOUR.COM ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Heath Slocum, winner of the inaugural McGladrey Classic last year, returned to the Seaside Course this week hoping to make some progress. Rather than turn his victory into a big 2011, Slocum went to work trying to improve his game and took a couple steps back early this year. The work on his full swing cut into his practice time on and around the greens and that cause his whole game to suffer. He returned to Sea Island without a top 10 on his 2011 record but Sunday’s 4-under 66 left him close. “I have been going back to some of the stuff I’ve done well in the past and that was always the goal, but everything just seems to be getting a bit more comfortable,” Slocum said. “At the end of the day, I just need to make more putts and that’s been my biggest issue this year. I did a better job this week, but there’s still room for improvement. Slocum bogeyed two of his last three holes in Round 3 but made up those shots with two birdies on his first three holes Sunday. He parred his next seven holes but was back on the first page of the leaderboard at 9 under with three birdies between holes 11 and 14. A bogey on the 18th dropped him back to 8 under for the day and probably outside of the top 10 once again. “I played well, got it to 5 under on the day with four to play and one was a par 5,” Slocum said. “I was really trying to get to double digits and maybe sneak into 11 or something and see what happened. But I just couldn’t get a couple putts to drop late. The bogey on the last kind of hurts but overall it was a good week.” With things starting to come back together, Slocum will be in the field next week at the Children’s Micracle Network Hospitals Classic hoping to finish his 2011 season on a high note. “The same thing,” Slocum said of his goals for next week. “Try to improve and go enjoy myself. There’s a tournament there so I want to win and try to get into Maui in 2012. There are a lot of things there next week but most importantly I’ll just try to improve on this week.”

Scores low early at Sea Island

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Aside from Trevor Immelman’s tournament-record-tying 62 Saturday, there haven’t been many players going low on the Seaside Course the last two days. Round 1 featured 15 rounds of 65 or better but the last two days have seen a combined total of three. That number figures to trend back upward today. Alexandre Rocha is on No. 18 and is already 5 under for the day. With a birdie on No. 11, Robert Allenby has joined him at the 5 under mark. A trio of others -– Bud Cauley, Blake Adams and Heath Slocum – are at 4 under. Slocum, the 2010 champion here, just birdied No. 13 to reach 4 under while Cauley, who is looking to lock up his 2012 TOUR card, has four birdies through 11 holes. Seven others are at 3 under, including St. Simons Island resident Matt Kuchar, who has played just seven holes in his final round. On the leaderboard, Allenby is currently tied for fifth at 9 under. Cauley, Slocum and Kuchar join D.J. Trahan, who is 2 under through 6, at 8 under for the week and tied for 10th.
