Cink upsets Poulter in 19

MARANA, Ariz. – It was a quick title defense for Ian Poulter, who has just been sent packing when Stewart Cink made a 4-footer to win on the 19th hole. Cink, who hasn’t finished lower than fifth in the last three Accenture Match Play Championships, won three of the last five holes to earn the win. His record is now 22-11 overall. Cink came into the championship seeded 14th after slipping to No. 57 in the world. Poulter, who is ranked 12th, was the No. 3 seed. Cink now plays the winner of the match between Alvaro Quiros and Y.E. Yang, which just went to the 19th hole.

Quiros takes advantage of conditions

It’s early yet, but Alvaro Quiros has just finished off the round of the day, a 67 that brought him from even par to 5 under for the tournament. The big-hitting Spaniard made his sixth and final birdie at the 18th hole -- much to the delight of the fans in the massive grandstands that are starting to fill up in earnest now.

U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell is also making up some ground. The affable Northern Irishman started the day at 1 under after a third-round 74 but has made six birdies and two bogeys in his first 14 holes to climb into the top 10 – for now, at least. – Helen Ross
