Two move in, two fall out in top 125

By Brian Wacker, PGATOUR.COM

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- For all the back and forth, permutations, and scoreboard watching, only two players moved from outside the top 125 on the money list to inside it, and one of them was the winner of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic.

Charlie Beljan, who entered the week 139th in money, locked up a PGA TOUR card for the next two years after his two-shot victory. Tim Herron’s journey to full status was a little more harrowing.

Herron, who came here 136th in money, was cruising along with five birdies through his first 14 holes Sunday. Then he double bogeyed the 17th hole after hitting his tee shot into the water and left his putt from just off the green a few inches short of the hole.

“I needed to suck it up and hit it down the left and try to hit a cut and I came over and hooked it in the water,” Herron said. “I thought if I got in at 12 under, I was in.”

But Herron finished at 11 under and thought he was out, kicking and walking on his bag in frustration. “Usually when I walk on something, it breaks,” he said.

Then he was informed he was safe.

“Billy Andrade told me, ‘Don't worry about it; you’re in; don't break any more stuff’,” Herron said. “But I didn't believe him.”

Herron finished 124th, about $13,000 ahead of Kevin Chappell.

Chappell, who tied for 34th, teetered back and forth most of the day before finishing just over $1,800 ahead of Jerry Kelly, who finished outside the top 125 for the first time in more than a decade.

Chappell, though, wasn't safe until Charlie Wi and Josh Teater each made par on the last hole. If either made bogey, Kelly would have moved up on the leaderboard and passed Chappell on the money list.

Kelly, meanwhile, can use a career money exemption.

Only two players fell out of the top 125. Rod Pampling and Billy Mayfair, who began the week 124th and 125th, respectively, both missed the cut and had to watch their fate from home.

Herron: Amazing how game teases you

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- It wasn't the biggest turnaround in PGA TOUR history but even so it was pretty impressive.

Tim Herron improved 15 shots from the first round to the second when he tied the course record with a 61 at Sedgefield on Friday. It is the biggest swing between the first two rounds on TOUR this year, although, as a point of reference -- but not necessarily a record -- Michael Clark shot 81-62 at the 2004 FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Herron’s peers were impressed.

"That was a great round," noted Tim Clark, who had shot 62 on Thursday. "... I thought it played tougher than yesterday. I would not have seen that score today on the course the way the pins were set-up.

"That's an amazing round and obviously now with the wind blowing in the afternoon I don't think you'll see it like that this afternoon."

Herron had started the round next to last in the field of 156h after opening with a 76. At 3 under, he'll make the cut and the man who entered the week ranked 139th in the FedExCup will keep his Playoff hopes alive. He likely needs to finish 13th or better in order to move into the top 125 and make the field for The Barclays.

Herron had 34 putts in the first round -- and he thinks he had five three-putts from off the green so in a way, it actually was more. Herron went to the putting green with a long putter on Friday morning but ended up using the same one he'd used in the first round with much better results.

"I've been hitting it pretty good all year," said Herron, who ranks 157th in strokes-gained putting on TOUR this year. "I kind of zoned it in a little bit today and just kind of kept rolling and making putts."

Herron went out in 32 after making four birdies and a bogey. He missed a 10-footer on the ninth but got hot on the back nine, making birdie putts of 7, 2, 3, 24 and 4 feet, as well as a two-putt from 15 feet at the 15th hole.

"I missed a couple on the front," Herron said. "I missed about a 4-footer straight down the hill, maybe 5-footer and so I had a good chance at 59. You didn't know that on 9. I was just trying to make some putts and gain some kind of confidence.

“It's amazing this game can tease you. You want to like pack it in and shoot 61 and you don't know what to do."

Herron ties course mark of 61

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Tim Clark, Sergio Garcia, Jimmy Walker and Harris English may own the lead at the Wyndham Championship right now but Tim Herron is the one who grabbed the morning headlines.

Herron, who started the day 155th in a 156-man field, tied the course record with a 61. He moved up 121 spots when he finished into a tie at 3 under.

The 15-shot swing assured Herron of a spot on the weekend. It also gave him a shot at making the FedExCup Playoffs. Herron started the week at No. 139 and he likely needs to finish in a tie for eighth or higher to move into the top 125 and earn a spot in the field at The Barclays.

Herron started on the front nine and made the turn in 32 after notching four birdies and a bogey. He birdied the 10th hole and then reeled off five in a row starting at No. 13 to shoot 29 on the back.

Herron into top 100, left with 'what ifs'

Tim Herron moved into the top 100 on the money list with his tie for 5th at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. But the week could have been so much more. After missing a 12-foot birdie putt on the short par-4 15th,Herron was still 19 under, one shot behind leader Kevin Na, when he teed off on the par-5 16th. After laying up from the left rough to have a 131-yard approach, Herron found the water short of the green on his third shot. The subsequent double bogey dashed his hopes of a return to the winner’s circle.

“I don't know if I wasn't committed or something,” Herron said. “I don't know what happened. I actually had a good number. It was a nice firm wedge. I had 130. The wind was swirling, so maybe I just didn't do it.” Herron finished with pars on the final two holes and settled at 17 under, tied with David Hearn, Carl Pettersson, Jhonattan Vegas and Spencer Levin, six shots behind Kevin Na. Herron, who hit the same wedge on No. 18 over the green noted that if he could have swapped his approaches from Nos 16 and 18, that his round, and result, would have been much different. The four-time PGA TOUR winner hasn’t notched a victory since 2006 but has had a resurgence of sorts this year with three top-10 finishes now. He’s still anxiously looking forward to a chance at returning to the winner’s circle. “I wanted a chance to win,” he said. “I don't have many chances, so I'm disappointed with that. So anyways, go onto next week.” Herron is scheduled to tee it up at CordeValle Golf Club next week in the Frys.com Open.

Update: Watney, Na tied for lead

Nick Watney stood on the teebox at the par-5 13th two shots behind Kevin Na. He now heads to the drivable par-4 15th tied for the lead. After a birdie on No. 13 cut Na’s lead to one, the leader hit his tee shot into a greenside bunker on No. 14 and went on to bogey the hole, dropping into a tie with Watney at 20 under. Tim Herron is now just one shot behind the co-leaders at 19 under. Two back ar Carl Pettersson, Jhonattan Vegas and Paul Goydos.

Final groups reach the 'Vegas Strip'

If anyone is hoping to make a move at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, now is the time. The final groups have reached what PGA TOUR Network’s Bob Stevens is calling “the Las Vegas strip.” Holes 13 through 16 at TPC Summerlin are four of the six easiest holes on the course, playing an average of 1.483 strokes under par for the week. That’s a substantial number considering the overall average score for the first three rounds was fractions of a stroke better than 2-under par. Here’s a look at how the top players on the leaderboard have fared this week on the Strip: Kevin Na: 7 under Tim Herron: 4 under Nick Watney: 8 under Carl Pettersson: 6 under Kris Blanks: 9 under Paul Goydos: 7 under Jhonattan Vegas: 6 under

8:36 PM

Update: Na up two at the turn

The final group has made the turn at TPC Summerlin and, at 21 under, Kevin Na has a two-shot lead over Nick Watney. Tim Herron and Paul Goydos are three back with five others at 17 under. Watney briefly tied Na at 19 under with a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-4 7th hole but Na answered with a birdie from inside 4 feet to move back ahead. The 28-year old Na, searching for his first PGA TOUR victory in his 132nd career start, added a birdie on the par-5 9th to reach his current number and head to the back nine in the driver’s seat.

7:38 PM

Update: Gainey, Herron enter the mix

At 20 under, Kevin Na is still topping the leaderboard at TPC Summerlin. But there are some new faces applying pressure. Four-time PGA TOUR winner Tim Herron has entered the picture with a quartet of front nine birdies to reach 19 under, one shot behind Na. Herron has a pair of top-10 finishes this season and a third would lock up a 2012 TOUR card for the man currently ranked No. 105 on the money list. Na’s fellow Vegas-are resident and playing partner, Nick Watney, is still two back and has been joined by Tommy Gainey, who has posted back-to-back birdies to get to 18 under. Robert Garrigus, who joins Watney and Na in the final group, is even through six holes and four shots off the pace.

Wrapping up Round 3

Nick Watney and Kevin Na share the 54-hole lead at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. The duo, tied at 17 under, will be joined by Robert Garrigus (-16) in the final grouping Sunday at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. local time). Watney, a Vegas-area resident, birdied five of his last six holes Saturday as he made a late surge to the top of the leaderboard. Na did most of his damage on the more difficult front nine, managing just one birdie on the back nine as he shot a 5-under 66. Joining Garrigus one shot off the pace will be Kris Blanks. Two back are Tommy Gainey, Paul Goydos and Tim Herron. The six players tied with, or within two shots of Watney entering the final round, have a combined total of six PGA TOUR victories -- four belonging to Herron and two for Goydos. Watney has four, including two this year, as he rebounds from missed opportunities in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. The Regular Season points leader posted just one top-10 finish in the four Playoffs events, but has wasted no time coming back into form.

Herron putting experience to good use

In this year of the young gun, there’s still something to be said for experience. Making his 13th start in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Childern Open, 41-year-old Tim Herron is 11 under through two rounds, just one shot off the pace. He’s one of just two 40-somethings among the 11 players at 10 under or better.

Herron
Herron attributes his early success at TPC Summerlin to his history at the course. “I know it's a shootout on the weekend, so I'm just hoping to keep rolling the putts,” he said. “Today I made a lot of 15, 20-footers. I know the greens pretty well, so I need to stay aggressive with the putting.” Herron had a streak of three consecutive top-30 finishes at Summerlin snapped last year when he missed the cut after a pair of 71s. After a 65-66 start, his best first two rounds here since 2003, the four-time PGA TOUR winner is positioned to move up from No. 105 on the money list and secure his TOUR card for 2012.
