Nice pro debut for
Luke Guthrie, the two-time Big Ten medalist from
Illinois. Despite a double bogey at his last hole on Thursday, he
shot a 1-under 69 in the first round of TPC Southwind. "My first
pro event, first pro debut and solid first round — minus the
18th hole," Guthrie said after his round. Guthrie turned pro after
last week’s NCAA Championships at Riviera, and spent the
early part of this week trying to qualify for the U.S. Open (he
came up just short). Still, all signs were encouraging after his
sub-par round, which included birdies in two of his first three
holes, and another hot stretch midway in his round when he birdied
three of four holes. "Got a couple of putts to fall early and that
got me pretty comfy out there," Guthrie said. His goals are simple
this week: "Hoping to learn a lot and just play some good golf," he
said.
