Wild card pick: Tampa Bay

Each week, PGATOUR.COM's Fantasy Insider Rob Bolton offers his Power Rankings for the weekly TOUR event as well as his Sleeper picks. But what about the players who don't make the Power Rankings but who can't really be considered Sleepers? Bolton will make one "wild card" selection from the large group of players who fall into that middle range but might rise up to claim the title. This week's pick is ...

ROBERT GARRIGUS

Gets the benefit of the doubt despite a disappointing last-place finish (of 65) at the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship. He was making his debut at TPC Blue Monster at Trump Doral but still couldn't break 74 in any round. Climbed into a playoff last year at Copperhead with a closing 64. Ranked T5 in greens in regulation for the week and T2 in both eagles (1) and birdies (20). Currently 17th on the PGA TOUR in GIR and fourth in par breakers.

Rd. 4: Kuchar def. Garrigus, 3 and 2

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

MARANA, Ariz. -- Robert Garrigus came to Dove Mountain to play in his first Accenture Match Play Championship brimming with confidence.

Matt Kuchar, though, had the experience and his steady game won out over the go-for-broke-style of Garrigus.

Kuchar never trailed in this quarterfinal match, winning the second hole with a 4-foot birdie after Garrigus missed from 6 feet. He went 2-up when Garrigus made bogey at the third hole but Kuchar did the same at the fourth.

Kuchar's birdies at the sixth and ninth holes gave him a 3-up advantage at the turn and he went one better at No. 10 when Garrigus made bogey. But Garrigus won the 12th hole with a par when Kuchar couldn't get up and down from the greenside bunker and the 13th with a 25-inch birdie putt to claw his way back into the match.

Kuchar then made a 4-footer for birdie at the 15th hole to get back to 3 up, and the win was assured when the two men halved the 16th with pars.

Kuchar has lost to the eventual champ last two years -- bowing to Luke Donald in the 2011 semifinals and Hunter Mahan in the quarters last year. He has a 13-3 record at this event.

"It's nice to be still alive and playing tomorrow," Kuchar said. "Robert today gave me a couple holes early. I got off to a nice lead and then I stumbled a little bit there kind of three-quarters into the round and kind of felt like we were back in a battle again.

"I was pretty excited to hit some good shots on 14, 15 and 16 to be able to close him out and be able to hopefully go home soon and get some rest."

Garrigus said he thought he lose focus in the afternoon match after beating Freddie Jacobson 3 and 2 in the morning. His left wrist also locked up on him on the first hole.

"I still had a chance with making all those bad swings and hitting it in the bushes three or four times," he said. "If I kept it in the fairway in the afternoon, I would have been fine, but I kept hitting it in the darned desert.

"It was disappointing to lose the match, but all in all, it was a great week. Another top five in front of the stage that I wanted it in front of. It's not in Puerto Rico or México, this is a World Golf Championships, and it's all good things. I played well, Matt played well, we had a good time today, and that's about it."

SCORECARD STATS: Matt Kuchar made five birdies and three bogeys. Garrigus made three birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey.

HOLES WON: Kuchar won six holes. Garrigus won three holes

NEXT OPPONENT: Kuchar plays Jason Day, who beat Graeme McDowell 1-up in the quarterfinals.

Rd. 3: Garrigus def. Jacobson, 3 and 1

MARANA, Ariz. -- At 7,791 yards, the Ritz Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain is right down Robert Garrigus' alley and he continued to build confidence with his third-round win over Fredrik Jacobson.

Garrigus won the par-5 second hole with a 22-inch birdie putt and the fifth with a 7-footer. A bogey at the sixth hole gave one back but Garrigus made birdies at Nos. 8 and 9 to make the turn 3 up.

Jacobson mounted a charge on the back nine, making three birdies in succession starting at No. 11 to square the match. But Garrigus answered with a 6-foot birdie at No. 14 and then drove the green at the 15th and made a 6-footer for eagle there to go 1 up again.

Jacobson lipped out a 5-footer for birdie at the 16th hole that would have pulled him to 1 down. An adventure in the desert with Garrigus safely on the green in two prompted Jacobson to concede the 17th and the match.

Garrigus, who is playing in his first Accenture Match Play Championship, says he likes the format.

"I make a lot of birdies, and if the guy I'm playing with doesn't make a lot of birdies, he's in trouble because I'm going to make some," he said. "I missed a lot of short putts today, too. I stuffed it on almost every single hole, put a lot of pressure on Freddie.

"It was a great match. He came back. I made a couple bad swings on 11, 12 and 13, he birdied all of them. ... It's just the nature of the beast. I make a lot of birdies, and if I hit it straight, I'm not going to make many mistakes, so it's definitely a good format for me.

SCORECARD STATS: Garrigus made six birdies, an eagle and a bogey. Jacobson made three birdies and no bogeys.

HOLES WON: Garrigus won seven holes. Jacobson won four holes.

NEXT OPPONENT: Matt Kuchar, who beat Nicolas Colsaerts 4 and 3.

"Matt is very consistent," Garrigus said. "I'm going to have to play well. I'll probably have to shoot 6 , 7 , 8 under again because I'm swinging it well and rolling it well, so it should be a lot of fun."

Rd. 2: Garrigus def. Oosthuizen, 3 & 2

MARANA, Ariz. -- Big-hitting American Robert Garrigus, a No. 9 seed, upset Louis Oosthuizen, the top seed in the Hogan bracket, 3 and 2 in the second round.

With the earlier loss of Luke Donald to Scott Piercy, all four No. 1 seeds have now been eliminated. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods lost in the first round.

Garrigus said he never felt like an underdog to Oosthuizen, despite the seeding.

"I felt like I was playing better than anybody coming in here, so whatever seed it was didn't matter," Garrigus said.

Garrigus indeed has been putting well this week, having needed just 47 puttsin the first two rounds. On Friday, he had eight birdies on his round, with four birdies putts coming between 7 and 11 feet. He now has 14 birdies through the first two rounds.

"I looked at all the guys in my bracket and I was like, 'I can beat him, I can beat him and I can beat him,' " Garrigus said. "If I'm putting well, I'm going to be hard to beat."

Garrigus won the first two hole but the match was all square through eight, as Oosthuizen played a bogey-free 2 under for the first eight holes.

But from there, Garrigus was a bogey-free 4 under in the final eight holes and Oosthuizen could not keep pace.

SCORECARD STATS: Garrigus carded eight birdies and two bogeys. Oosthuizen carded four birdies and one bogey.

HOLES WON: Garrigus won five holes. Oosthuizen won two holes.

NEXT OPPONENT: Garrigus plays Fredrik Jacobson in the third round of the Hogan bracket.

Rd. 1: Garrigus def. Grace, 4 & 3

MARANA, Ariz. -- Robert Garrigus birdied five of his first eight holes to race out to a commanding lead en route to a 4 and 3 win over Branden Grace in Thursday's first round.

Garrigus, a No. 9 seed, now faces Louis Oosthuizen in the second round of the Hogan bracket.

Garrigus opened the match by making a birdie putt from 11 feet. He added another from inside 17 feet at the third and then another from 24 feet at the fifth.

His only slip was a double bogey at the 10th but by then, it didn't matter.

Garrigus is playing in his first Accenture Match Play Championship.

Garrigus making more TPC memories

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- When he was a student at a local community college, Robert Garrigus volunteered at what is now known as the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

He worked the practice range at TPC Scottsdale that year. Garrigus remembers Hal Sutton letting him swing a driver -- and the 20-year-old out-driving the pro. Fuzzy Zoeller let him hit a few, too.

"Just stuff like that you remember for the rest of your life, and this is kind of where it started," Garrigus said.

Oh, and don't forget the ace Tiger Woods made at the 16th hole that year. Garrigus was in the gallery, chanting for Woods' playing partner, Omar Uresti, who had hit his tee shot at the famous par 3 to about 4 feet. And then Tiger's ball found the cup and set the arena on its ear.

"It was unbelievable," Garrigus recalled. "I told Tiger about that. He's like, oh, you were there for that, huh? I'm like, yeah, the freaking windows in the clubhouse were shaking. They could feel the roar from the clubhouse.

"That was pretty cool. That made me -- if I didn't want to be a professional golfer right there, I wasn't going to be one."

Garrigus, who turned pro later that year, is making more memories at TPC Scottsdale this year. He fired his second-straight 66 on Friday and moved to 10 under par, which was one shot off the lead when he finished and two behind Keegan Bradley as the morning wave finished.

Garrigus, who now lives in Ahwatukee, which is about 25 miles from Scottsdale, is playing in the Waste Management Phoenix Open for the fifth time. He tied for 11th in his 2007 debut but had missed the last three cuts.

The veteran came into this week playing the best golf of his career, though. He finished second four times on the PGA TOUR last year and added a fifth in Malaysia in October. A week ago, Garrigus tied for sixth at the Farmers Insurance Open after closing with a 67.

"It's been a fun run, and I'm keeping it going," Garrigus said. "I feel really strong, very healthy. My swing is not breaking down, I'm not getting nervous, and it's been a lot of fun the past six, seven months."

Garrigus, who has one PGA TOUR victory, actually traces the upturn to his tie for third at the 2011 U.S. Open. That's when he finally began to feel like he had the game to compete with anyone and that "even when I wasn't playing good I could still finish in the top 10 like last week," he said.

Friday's 66, which included six birdies and a lone bogey, was his 14th straight at par or better dating back to late last year. He ranks fifth in driving distance in 2013 with an average of 308 yards but he's also third in greens in regulation finding 79.17 percent in regulation.

Garrigus has dialed back a little this week, hitting the occasional 3-wood -- which also travels in excess of 300 yards in then desert air -- to make sure he finds fairways instead of cacti. He also has tried to limit the distractions from family and friends in hopes of being able to celebrate with them come Sunday.

"To win in your hometown and always being able to play here regardless of your status, and doing it in front of the crazies out there, that would mean a lot," Garrigus said. "And that would give me a lot of confidence because it's like a major on the last four holes."

Bradley, Castro, Garrigus on move

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Is TPC Scottsdale ripe for another run at a 59 on Friday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open?

Bo Van Pelt got things rolling when he shot the magic number in the pro-am, then Phil Mickelson thrilled the crowd on Thursday when he had chances on the final two holes to post the sixth 59 in PGA TOUR history.

Watching to see if history is made for a third straight day is probably too much to ask. But Keegan Bradley had visions dancing in our heads when he played his first seven holes in 5 under with an eagle and three birdies.

Bradley, who started on the back nine, ended up making the turn in 31. He's moved to 9 under and is tied with Robert Garrigus, two strokes off the current lead held by Mickelson, who tees off at 2:16 p.m. ET.

Robero Castro, who is also making a move on the back, is one stroke behind Mickelson after playing his first seven holes in 4 under. Jeff Maggert, Angel Cabrera Ryan Moore and John Rollins are all on the course at 8 under, as well.

TPC Scottsdale played to an average of 69.015 -- nearly two strokes under par in the first round.

Davis Love III withdrew prior to his second round with a nagging neck injury. He shot a first-round 72.

Garrigus climbing leaderboard

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Don't look now but Robert Garrigus is cllmbing the leaderboard at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.

Garrigus, you might remember, tied for second at last year's tournament in the desert -- one of four runner-up finishes he had in PGA TOUR events last year. He also tied for second in Malaysia.

Garrigus, who is making his 2013 debut at the Humana Challange, started on the back nine at La Quinta on Friday and has gone birdie-eagle-birdie to move to 10 under. He's tied with overnight co-leader, Jason Kokrak, and the two are one shot off the lead.

Roberto Castro and James Hahn, who were the other two first-round pacesetters, have played five and four holes, respectively, and are both 2 under for the day and 11 under for the tournament. Castro is playing the Palmer Course at PGA West while Hahn is at La Quinta.

Russell Henley, last week's stunning rookie winner at the Sony Open in Hawaii, continues to play well. He's 1 under through four holes at the Palmer Course and tied with Ryan Palmer and Greg Chalmers at 9 under.

Phil Mickelson, who struggled with his putter and shot even par on Thursday, is giving himself a shot at playing the entire weekend. He's on the Nicklaus Course and has birdied four of his first seven holes to move to 4 under, which is currently tied for 62nd. The cut will be made on Saturday after everyone has played each of the three courses in the rotation.

Equipment: Garrigus signs with Adams

By Jonathan Wall, Equipment Insider

Adams Golf added another former PGA TOUR winner to its staff on Tuesday in 2010 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic champion Robert Garrigus.

Garrigus was with TaylorMade before switching. He’ll wear the Adams Golf logo on his bag and headwear and carry a 22-degree SUPER S hybrid.

“With the distance I’m able to generate, plus the launch characteristics from the Velocity Slot Technology in the new SUPER clubs, my approach shots into longer holes will land exceptionally soft,” Garrigus said.

Garrigus will open his 2013 season this week at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation, where he tied for second last year.
