Frazar finishes at 80

Tough day for defending champion Harrison Frazar. He shot a 10-over 80, ending his round with a triple bogey at the ninth hole (his finishing hole). Frazar’s round included that triple, a double bogey, seven bogeys and two birdies. In winning last year, Frazar suffered just one double and four bogeys in 72 holes in regulation. It’s the 11th time in 1,177 career rounds that Frazar has shot 80 or higher, and just the fourth time he has shot 10 over or worse in a round (his career-worst round is a 12-over 82 in the final round of the 2007 U.S. Open). FedExCup Update: Early chance for Haas

Live Report Image
Greenwood/Getty Images
La Quinta has been kind to Bill Haas in recent years.
FEDEXCUP: Current standings | Weekly leaders | More By Chris Dunham, PGATOUR.COM Does anyone enjoy the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation more than Bill Haas? The reigning FedExCup champion has found no shortage of success in seven starts in La Quinta. The 2010 champion and 2011 runner-up has posted 20 consecutive sub-70 rounds here. In seven starts, Haas has just one round over par and no finish lower than a tie for 34th (2005, in his event debut). This week presents the 29-year-old’s second opportunity to get a quick start on his title defense. His first attempt didn’t go as well as hoped when Haas started 2012 with two even-par 73s while more than half the field was posting red numbers at Kapalua. Bookends were key for Haas en route to the 2011 FedExCup title. Of his seven top-10 finished, Haas had three to open his year and one to close the FedExCup season. If he doesn’t have a good week here, Haas will be behind his schedule from the last two years and will need to make up ground elsewhere. With more than 30 events ahead, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to rack up points, though. FRAZAR ENTERS THE PICTURE: Sticking with golf is looking like a very good decision for Harrison Frazar. It took 355 starts for Frazar to break through with his maiden victory (last year’s FedEx St. Jude Classic). Prior to that, Frazar hadn’t finished inside the top 10 since the 2009 Turning Stone Resort Championship or the top 3 since 2005 at Disney. Now Frazar is off to one of the best starts on TOUR, earning a tie for fifth and a T2 in two 2012 starts -- the only player with two top-5 finishes -- and a fourth-place standing in the FedExCup race. ROOKIE SECONDS: While the Sony Open in Hawaii has not featured a rookie finisher inside the top 10 since 2009, the Humana Challenge is far more welcoming to the first-year TOUR pros. Three rookies -- Chris Kirk, Keegan Bradley and champion Jhonattan Vegas -- finished inside the top 10 here last year. Interestingly, that trio all ended the season with victories and spots in the top five of PGATOUR.COM’s Rookie Rankings. Ted Potter Jr. (T13 at the Sony Open) is off to the best start in this year’s class.

TOP 100 TO WATCH IN 2012: Frazar No. 75 | Top 100 to Watch archive

One of the biggest surprises so far in the 2012 season has been the play of Harrison Frazar, who has arguably hit the ball better than anyone else in the first two weeks of the year.

So good, in fact, that the Texan laments his putting, which he feels cost him a shot at winning Sunday at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

It's pretty heady stuff for Frazar, who has a pair of top-five finishes to open the year, including a disappointing back nine Sunday at Waialae, when he closed with eight frustrating pars and finished two shots back of Johnson Wagner.

Frazar parred the easy par-5 18th, missing a 7-footer that would have gotten him to 12 under.

"I played beautifully tee-to-green and I really left a bunch out there," said Frazar, who had 31 putts Sunday. "[I] hit some bad putts and then decent putts that I didn't read properly. But for the most part, they were poor putts, and I'm a little disappointed about it."

Frazar admits that he should be happy with two top-fives to open the year. His unexpected victory in the 2011 FedEx St. Jude Classic capped a time in which he considered whether to leave the game he'd played all his life. The victory put him in the winners-only Hyundai Tournament of Champions for the first time, and he'd brought the whole family with him. In short, he wanted to make sure he made it back to Maui in 2013.

"You're always happy if you get two top fives to start the year, but I don't know really how to explain it, I'm just playing golf," Frazar said.

Frazar isn't letting up, either. He's entered in this week's Humana Challenge, where he tied for 54th last year.

Update: Moving day movers

Fredrik Jacobson (-14) has been a constant on, or around, the top of the leaderboard throughout the third round of the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions. He's currently two shots ahead of Louis Oosthuizen, who entered the day one back, but the names behind those two have been undergoing seismic changes. Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer are each 4 under , 14 and 13 holes into their respective rounds, and find themselves just three back. Also in that group is Paul Casey. The four-way tie at 10 under includes Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell. The Northern Irishmen are 5 under and 4 under on the day with a few holes to play. Jhonattan Vegas, a TOUR rookie who won the Bob Hope Classic in January, and Harrison Frazar, who earned his maiden victory earlier this year in Memphis, are the day’s biggest movers. Vegas is finished after a 7-under 65 moved him to 9 under on the week. Frazar has bounced back from a Friday 75 to be 9 under through 16 holes in his third round. Frazar started on the back nine and had seven birdies, one bogey and one par to turn at 6 under. He’s alternated pars and birdies on his first seven holes on the front nine.

Leaderboard update: Paddy surges

EDISON, N.J. -- The last two players in the field for The Barclays have positioned themselves for what could turn out to be a long run in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

Padraig Harrington, who moved from 130th to 124th last week at the Wyndham Championship, has just finished off a round of 67. That left him at 10 under for the tournament and in pursuit of his first PGA TOUR win since he won the last two majors in 2008.

Harrington is now projected at No. 48 in the FedExCup standings, which gives him a legitimate shot at making it through all four Playoffs events for the third time in his career.

Harrington's playing partner, William McGirt, who was the bubble boy when he came to Plainfield Country Club, has also prospered this week. The PGA TOUR rookie shot 69 on on Friday after opening with a 64. McGirt is projected at No. 62 in the FedExCup.

Harrison Frazar, who held a share of the lead at 7 under overnight, has played eight holes of his second round. He's made four birdies and now stands in sole possession of third at 11 under, three strokes off the pace being set by Matt Kuchar.

McGirt’s roll stopped by darkness

William McGirt had birdied seven of his last eight holes before play was halted.

By Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM

EDISON, N.J. -- He certainly didn't want to, not with the kind of roll he was on. But William McGirt had to leave that 12-footer for birdie on the par-5 12th hole until Friday morning.

The PGA TOUR rookie had just made birdies on seven of his last eight holes. But darkness was settling over Plainfield Country Club and McGirt didn't want to take the chance of missing that putt.

"I wanted to hit it so bad, but just looking at it there was enough of a shadow on the green that I couldn't really read it," McGirt said. "My eyes were seeing one thing and my feet were feeling something else. So I put a mark on it."

If McGirt makes that putt, he'll own sole possession of the lead at The Barclays, a tournament he wasn't sure he was going to get to play in until Sunday afternoon when he climbed two spots to No. 125 in the final regular season FedExCup standings. He left the course on Thursday tied for the lead with Harrison Frazar, who had finished off his 64, and Matt Kuchar, who had two holes remaining.

McGirt, though, will have six more holes to play after he putts out on the 12th. Interestingly, his PGA TOUR career low came last Friday on another Donald Ross course at Sedgefield Country Club where he shot 64 and went on to tie for 52nd at the Wyndham Championship. McGirt, who had some anxious moments on Sunday, eventually edged Justin Leonard by six points for the final playoff spot.

"All in all, everything is going pretty well," McGirt said of his performance Thursday. "I was driving it pretty well, hit my irons pretty well and making some putts. So pretty good combo. Hopefully,  I can finish it off in the morning and get another good one in the afternoon."

McGirt holed a 13-footer to save par from the greenside bunker at No. 3, and he said that "jump-started everything" on Thursday. He made a 21-footer for his first birdie at the fourth hole and got up-and-down from the back fringe at the par-5 5th before deadly approaches at Nos. 6 and 7 left him putts of 4 feet and 13 inches.

McGirt got on another run at the ninth hole where he made an 11-footer for birdie. He followed with putts of 4 and 31 feet on the next two holes to move to 7 under before three quality shots set up the 12-footer he'll face at 7:15 a.m. on Friday.

"It's been so long since I've been on a streak like that, I wish I could do it more," McGirt said. "It seemed like today I had a lot of good numbers for shots. Just like last Friday, last Friday it seemed like every shot we walked off was a perfect number.

"Then on Saturday, I don't think I had a good number all day. Everything was dead in-between clubs. You're just trying to rip one or feather on in there. So it's kind of easy to get it going when you're hitting stock shots all day. So hopefully I can continue that tomorrow."
