GREENSBORO,N.C. -- Arjun Atwal and other PGA TOUR pros will be wearing saffron-colored ribbons this week at Sedgefield Country Club to honor the six Sikhs killed in the Aug. 5 massacre at a Wisconsin temple, as well as the police officer who was wounded in the attacks. 

“My family and I knew we had to do something to help the victims of this horrible tragedy right after we heard about it” said Atwal, who is from India and a Sikh. “I know that we can’t bring any of the victims back, but we wanted to help out as much as we can to honor and bring awareness to those involved.”

Atwal, who won the 2010 Wyndham Championship, and his family are making a donation to the victims. Saffron is the color of the Sikhs, whom Atwal described as a peace-loving and welcoming people during a press conference earlier this week.

The Sikh Temple of Wisconsin has set up a fund for the shooting victims. All the donations, which are tax deductible, go directly to lower-income families who lost loved ones, those injured in the shooting and to repairing the temple. To donate, click here.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Arjun Atwal didn't exactly have high expectations as he drove across town to play in the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic.

The Orlando resident was coming off a missed cut, and he hadn't had a top-10 since he tied for eighth at the HP Byron Nelson Championship back in May. So Atwal, who Monday-qualified and won last year’s Wyndham Championship, was just trying to clear his head and play golf.

"It's been a mixed bag of everything this year, so when I started to hit it good, then I (started) putting really well,” Atwal said. "So today I didn't really have any expectations of trying to hit it, shoot low or whatever. Just whatever it gave me."

Turns out, the bogey-free 66 that Atwal ended up posting was good enough for a tie for the lead with world No. 1 Luke Donald and four other players. The 38-year-old from India hit 10 fairways and 16 greens while using just 29 putts in a solid start.

"Today I didn't think ahead of myself; I didn't think about anything," Atwal said. "Just one shot at a time, like they say, but it was actually happening. So it was good."

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – As the morning wave finishes on a windy Thursday, there is big group at the top of the leaderboard that includes the No. 1 player in the world.

Luke Donald, who is bidding to wrest the PGA TOUR money title from Webb Simpson, is among six players shooting 66. Simpson, who played with Donald, is two strokes back in the spirited competition.

“I know for most of the round I played a pretty solid round of golf today,” Donald, who trials by $363,029. “Couple loose shots at the ed. Wasn’t that easy out there. I think the wind was strong enough to make it a little bit tricky with club selection.

“Six birdies, no bogeys is always a good round.”

The last time the money title changed hands in the final week of the season was in 1996 when Tom Lehman overtook Phil Mickelson at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.

Two of the other leaders have their 2012 PGA TOUR cards at stake. James Driscoll came into the week ranked No. 125 on the money list while Nathan Green is No. 175.

Two of other three players tied at 6 under picked up their first TOUR wins this year – Scott Stallings and Gary Woodland – while Arjun Atwal broke through in Greensboro last season.

EDISON, N.J. – This probably won’t come as a surprise but we likely won’t get the first round of The Barclays finished on Thursday. 

The final group of Arjun Atwal, Padraig Harrington and William McGirt aren’t slated to tee off No.  1 until 4:35 p.m. ET. But if Mother Nature cooperates, they could make considerable progress toward completion of their opening 18 holes.

The weather forecast for Friday is good with partly cloudy skies on the horizon and the rain expected to hold off until Saturday afternoon. Of course, the main event arrives on Sunday when Hurricane Irene blows into the area. 

Just how difficult has the scoring been on a hot, windy day outside Dallas? Well, the overnight leaders have gone backwards and one of them, Ryan Palmer, still leads.

Palmer is 1 over through nine holes and leads by one over Sergio Garcia, who made the turn in 2 over to fall to 6 under.

After that there’s a little separation with three players, including Jeff Overton, at 4 under.

The lowest round in the clubhouse so far? A 67 by Arjun Atwal, who is also 3 under for the tournament.

In all, just 19 players are under par for the week at the moment.
