Robert Allenby double-bogeyed the 72nd hole at the Mayakoba Golf Classic to fall to 15 under and into a playoff with rookie John Huh, who closed with a 63.
Chris Stroud had a shot to catch the duo at 15 under, but he also double-bogeyed the hole.
Matt Every and Colt Knost will tie for third after finishing 11 under. Overnight leader Daniel Summerhays shot a 73 and fell back into a tie for fifth.
FOLLOW THE PLAYOFF: Mayakoba Golf Classic
The only thing standing in Robert Allenby's way at the Mayakoba Golf Classic? A couple of closing bogeys ... or Chris Stroud.
Allenby is on the 17th fairway with a two-shot lead after playing the first 16 holes in 8 under. At 15 under, he's two shots ahead of Stroud, who is playing the 15th.
Rookie John Huh fired a 63 and is in the clubhouse at 13 under. He is assured his second top-10 finish in five starts.
Allenby is seeking his fifth PGA TOUR win, but first in 10 years. Stroud is winless in 143 starts.
MELBOURNE, Australia -- David Toms won the first hole and never looked back as he handed Robert Allenby a 7 and 5 defeat.
Toms posted a 3-1 record, winning twice with Hunter Mahan as a partner, as well as picking up his third Singles win in four Presidents Cups. Allenby only won one hole Sunday as he went winless in four matches this week.
The point put the Americans within two of a win at the Presidents Cup. The U.S. leads 16-12.
MELBOURNE, Australia --- Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk gave the Americans their third point of the day with a 4-and-3 win over Retief Goosen and Robert Allenby.
The win made Mickelson, who is the only man to have played in all nine Presidents Cups, the competition’s all-time points leader with 21.
The match turned in the Americans favor on the back nine. The two teams had matched birdies on the first two holes but the Americans lost the third hole with a bogey before squaring it when Mickelson rolled in a 16-footer at the seventh hole.
The International Team went double bogey-bogey on the next two holes to give the Americans a lead they didn’t relinquish. Mickelson then made a 6-footer for birdie at No. 11 and Furyk followed with another from 13 feet at the next to take the 4-up advantage they coaxed home.
“We played together in ‘99 at the Ryder Cup and we played well together,” Mickelson told NBC’s Dottie Petter. “And we felt like we wanted to partner again.”
In recent years, though, Mickelson and Furyk have often been tabbed to bring some of the less experienced players along. This week, though, it wasn’t necessary.
“This year we felt like our young guys wanted to play together and would play well together so it gave Jim and I a chance to do what we’ve wanted to do for years.”
Furyk said he was impressed with the way Mickelson putted on Thursday. The big lefthander has gone back to a conventional length putter and it was golden on Thursday.
“I felt good with an iron in my hand,” Furyk said. “My partner over here, I knew I didn’t have to hit it five feet.”
Robert Allenby drains a 40-footer for birdie on the sixth hole.
SELANGOR, Malaysia -- Australia's Robert Allenby shot an 8-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead over Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas after the first round of the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia, the second-year event sanctioned by the PGA TOUR and Asian Tour.
Allenby, a Captain’s Pick on the International team for next month’s Presidents Cup in Australia, birdied four of the first six holes and three of the last four in his bogey-free round at The Mines Resort and Golf Club.
"I got away with a nice par on the 18th. I made lots of nice putts and hit the ball really well all day," Allenby said. "I had just one wayward tee shot at the last, but I made a good par to save at the last. Overall, I'm happy with my golf. I've been playing well for a while, but haven't really put the scores on the board."
Vegas birdied the final four holes.
"I had a really good round and hit the ball well," said Vegas, who won on the PGA TOUR earlier this year in his rookie season. "I felt like I hit a lot of good putts as well. Hopefully, I can keep the momentum going for the next three days."
The four Captain’s Picks for this year’s Presidents Cup were announced Tuesday afternoon.
U.S. Captain Fred Couples selected FedExCup champion Bill Haas to go with his earlier announced pick of Tiger Woods.
International Captain Greg Norman selected two Australians, Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley.
