2013 PREVIEW: That disheartening Ryder Cup performance notwithstanding, the 2012 season was another good one for Steve Stricker, who picked up his 12th PGA TOUR win and posted seven total top-10s. He'll be looking to win at least once for fifth straight year in 2013, and he has an enviable record owning sole possession of the 54-hole lead -- Stricker is 7 for 7 in that position.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: The bookends to Stricker's 2012 season were decidedly different -- the elation of a win in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and his obvious distress as Martin Kaymer holed the putt that clinched the Ryder Cup for Europe during their Singles match. More than two months later at the World Challenge, Stricker, who went 0-4 at the Ryder Cup, said that loss "still lingers" but another New Year's in Hawaii could alter his outlook. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: Steve is one of the great wedge players in the world, now he has to regain his putting form after being frustrated with his putting in the second half of the season. I think he may understand his strengths and weaknesses better than any player on TOUR and has the discipline to play to his strengths. Steve is excellent at course management. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: While pocketing north of $3.4 million is stout, the 12-time PGATOUR winner suffered his third consecutive hit at the bank. And since he'll turn 46 in February, he's still not on sale in salary formats, but all other games should continue to ride this hoss. He's missed only one cut in his last 61 starts. We miss his days of a busier schedule, but his reorganization has allowed for greater staying power, and therefore just a marginal decline across the board. Perfectly ranked in this feature. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: Louis Oosthuizen's sophomore season on the PGA TOUR showed great progress. Included among his five top-10s were two seconds and a third, and he ended up seventh in the FedExCup after missing out on the Playoffs as a rookie. He finished sixth or better in his final four events in Europe, too, which should send the South African into 2013 with great confidence.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: The shot of the year would have been the 4-iron Oosthuizen holed for double eagle at No. 2 at Augusta National on Sunday -- that is, had it not been for the 7-iron Bubba Watson curved out of the trees on the second hole of their playoff later that day. Watson denied Oosthuizen his second major but the South African rebounded with a victory in Malaysia the following week. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: I think he has the best swing on TOUR. He generates so much power for a man that is not physically imposing. Every time I watch Louie play, I always wonder why he doesn't win more often. While leading the Deutsche Bank Championship he said he felt bad for Rory McIlroy, who was struggling to make birdies in the third round. McIlroy ended up winning the tournament and Oosthuizen was gracious in defeat. I wonder if Louie's weakness is being too nice a person. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: Rookie eligibility is criticized on the PGA TOUR, but despite his global experience and success, he was not immune to the pitfalls of first-time membership in 2011, thus debunking purists' theories. Lo and behold, with that season under his belt and a better plan of attack, he stuck with a predominantly U.S.-based schedule this year and crushed it to the tune of $3.46 million, second-highest among non-winners. He just turned 30, so settle in for another season. The South African has found a groove. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: What was shaping up to be a relatively average season turned around quickly when Nick Watney won The Barclays and the unofficial CIMB Classic in his final seven starts. He'll likely be working on his putting, which slipped from 12th to 106th in strokes gained, during the offseason. His scoring average tumbled, too -- from fifth to 60th overall and 16th to 127th in the final round.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: Watney's win at The Barclays helped stake the soft-spoken 31-year-old to a fourth-place finish in the FedExCup that was his highest ever. The Californian trailed Sergio Garcia by two strokes as the final round began and bolted to the top of the leaderboard with a 69 that secured a three-stroke win. His CIMB Classic victory was noteworthy, too, as Watney used a career-low 61 that included a bogey on the final hole to make up a four-stroke deficit. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: What a difficult year for Watney. His game did not come around until after the U.S. Open. It takes a lot of patience to endure six months of frustrating play. Watney broke though with a win at Barclays and I think will be in for a huge year in 2013. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: Unhappy gamers must be kept in context. That he barely broke $3 million after a career year misses the point. He's one of the busiest top-shelf investments that finished the year off better than he started. Chalked up five top 10s and added an unofficial victory at the CIMB classic with a patented closing 61. He deserves a long look in salary games and an automatic bite in second rounds of rotisserie formats. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: Graeme McDowell won three times worldwide in 2010, including the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. But his only wins since -- on either side of the Atlantic -- have come at Tiger Woods' season-ending shindig, most recently in December. He'll be looking to take that momentum and get back into the winner's circle in 2013.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: McDowell played in the final group on Sunday at the U.S. Open and British Open and finished 12th or better in all four of golf's crown jewels. He shared the lead with Jim Furyk at the Olympic Club but shot 73 and finished tied for second after missing a 25-footer on the 72nd hole to force a playoff. The Northern Irishman was tied for second entering the final round at Royal Lytham but shot 75 and tied for fifth. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: A very intense player on the golf course and a very nice person following the round. Graeme is a great driver of the golf ball and very good interview, always giving thoughtful answers. If you’d like to sit down and have a beer with a player, Graeme would be great company. He might even pick up the tab. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: The recently betrothed Ulsterman roared back from a disappointing 2011. He's on the short list of best active one-time winners on the PGA TOUR, but the criteria for that fact is reason for hesitation in salary games that list him at $2.4 million. Otherwise, he's cornerstone value in other formats where you've compensated with guys that tee it up at least 20 times. In his prime at 33. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: The most important thing to happen to Jason Day in 2012 occurred away from the golf course as he and his wife Ellie became parents for the first time. He took five weeks off during the summer to get acquainted with baby Dash, but the young Australian figures to be focused on work again in 2013 as his exemption for winning the 2010 HP Byron Nelson Championship has expired.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: Day played just 17 events last year but still managed four top-10s. He saved his best for the last as Day closed with a 65 at TPC Summerlin that included a front-nine 28 to finish solo fourth. Day only used 10 putts during his opening surge. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: It was a big year for Jason, as the Aussie became a first-time father and got his haircut. I'm not sure which was more traumatic for him. I know fatherhood was a distraction for him but in the very best of ways. Day will figure out how to juggle his time appropriately and is a good candidate for a breakthrough season and a major title. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: Costing just $1.143 million, he might populate more rosters in salary games than anyone else. An ankle injury thwarted a run at the Masters, where he shared runner-up honors in 2011. The birth of his first baby toyed with his scheduling until his son was born in mid-July. Looking to build some momentum into the offseason, he ended a three-year hiatus in the Fall Series and posted a season-best solo fourth at the Shriners Hospitals. Book him for more consistency in 2013. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: Look at the stats, and you'd think 2012 was a pretty good year for Jim Furyk. His scoring average improved from 40th to third while his tally in the final round went from 77th to 27th. That said, Furyk squandered four golden Sunday opportunities to win his 17th TOUR event -- so finding a way to reverse that trend in 2013 will be key.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: Of the four near-misses, the U.S. Open looms largest. Furyk, who won the 2003 Open and now has five other top-five finishes in the national championship, entered the final round with a share of the lead. But he bogeyed three of his last six holes on the way to a 74 that put him two strokes behind Webb Simpson. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: I am sure Jim looks back on 2012 and thinks of what might have been. He was a swing away from winning Transitions, the U.S. Open and the Bridgestone Invitational. Jim is an athlete and mentally tough. He will bounce back. A couple quick hooks hurt him at the U.S. Open but I thought he also played too quickly on the final hole at Bridgestone. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: Despite his series of unrequited runs at greatness, let's not overlook the value in the fact that he played himself into multiple opportunities to make history. We must also underscore his tenacity to fight back, not that anyone was surprised. Winning is hard, and no one banked more than he did ($3.623 million) without a trophy in 2012. Gamers will forever take two second-place finishes, one third and another five top 10s in a single season. With only one season outside $3.4 million since 2005, he belongs in the back half of your first round. Even at 42 years of age, that assessment is supported by a full schedule. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: A year after winning the Masters and finishing 16th or better in the other three majors, Charl Schwartzel's best major performance was a tie for 38th at the U.S. Open. He missed a month afterwards due to a torn muscle in his abdomen but closed his season out with five finishes overseas of fifth or better, including back-to-back wins in Thailand and South Africa, so Schwartzel has momentum for the new year.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: Schwartzel has made south Florida his U.S. base so perhaps it's only fitting that one of this two top-10 finishes came at the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship. He broke par in all three rounds and tied for fourth -- two years after finishing runner-up to his mentor and host Ernie Els on the same course. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: We did not see much of Charl in 2012. He did not begin his schedule until the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, played only 13 PGA TOUR Regular Season events and yet qualified for three FedExCup Playoffs tournaments. His ball-striking seemed a bit off to me, and he finished 153rd in greens in regulation. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: Given that the South African started playing majors in 2003, it's easy to forget that he's only 28. He dropped over three points in his greens-in-regulation split from 2011 and nabbed only two top 10s, both in March. Also failed to post a top 35 in any of the majors. And since he remained content with barely playing the membership minimum, his value is greatest in salary games at $1.138 million. Even if he plays more toward his potential, he doesn't warrant an early investment in long-term formats. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: Only one person had as many top-10 finishes as Bo Van Pelt did on TOUR in 2012. But Rory McIlroy converted four of his 10 into wins and Van Pelt's best was solo second at the AT&T National. Van Pelt, who has an overseas win each of the last two seasons, is a victory waiting to happen, though, and next year could be the one.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: The temptation would be to pick that runner-up finish to Tiger Woods at Congressional. But let's go with the 64 he shot in the first round of the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick in his home state of Indiana. Granted, he couldn't convert that share of the lead into a win but it was certainly an emotional day. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: Talk about improvement, BVP went from 144th in strokes gained-putting to 11th. He is third on TOUR in total driving and is set up for a huge 2013. I thought he was going to win AT&T National but faltered on the last three holes against Tiger Woods. I doubt he falters the next time he's in that position. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: It's not the first time I've written it, but it demands repeating. There are fantasy champions chanting "B-V-P! B-V-P!" this offseason. When a guy racks up 24 starts and 10 top 10s, the absence of a win is almost irrelevant. It's just more of the same, really. Since 2010, he's gone 63-for-79 with 23 top 10s and another 20 top 25s. It's also unfair to state that he hasn't won because he's done that, too. Since the conclusion of the 2011 season, he hoisted hardware at the CIMB Classic (2011) and in Australia on the European Tour in October 2012. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: A can't-miss kid out of UNLV, Ryan Moore has made steady progress in seven seasons on the PGA TOUR. After a career year in 2012 that saw him win for the second time and post eight top-10s, Moore stands on the verge of what could be a breakout campaign.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: Moore made a strong run through the FedExCup Playoffs, posting three straight top-10s, including a tie for third at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola after owning a share of the lead with three holes left. Armed with that burst of confidence, Moore returned home to Las Vegas and blitzed TPC Summerlin for a first-round 61 on the way to win one-stroke victory in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. – Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: Ryan kept flirting with wins during the FedExCup Playoffs until he finally broke through and won in his hometown of Vegas. Ryan told me he was taking the fall off so he could enjoy being a father for the first time. Ryan made a birdie every 3.9 holes last year, 11th-best on TOUR. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: I suspect that we're going to eventually look back at 2012 and see that he was just scraping the surface. Expectations are dangerous, of course, but he logged career highs in earnings ($2.858 million) and top 10s (eight). He also polished off his season with progressively improving results culminating in a win (and tournament record) in his college town of Las Vegas, all just a couple of weeks before the birth of his first child (a son on Oct. 19). He ranked seventh in the all-around, marking his first time inside the top 45. In a compressed season, the new daddy sets up as a bargain across the board. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert

2013 PREVIEW: With a year that included six top-10 finishes under his belt, 22-year-old Bud Cauley seems poised for success in 2013. The former Alabama All-American was remarkably consistent, finishing 25th or better in nearly half of the events where he made the cut, and came within eight spots of advancing to the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in his first full season on TOUR.
2012 DEFINING MOMENT: Cauley started the final round of the Wyndham Championship one shot off the pace being set by Sergio Garcia, then ended up in sole possession of third. It was his third finish of fourth or better in his last three starts, and matched his career best finish at the 2011 Frys.com Open. –- Helen Ross, PGATOUR.COM
ALBERS’ QUICK TAKE: I guess I was a little disappointed in Bud's season but that's more a reflection of my high expectations than in Cauley's performance. He had six Top 10 finishes and was 35th in the FedEx Cup Regular Season. I thought he would win in 2012 and am predicting a victory for him in 2013. -- Fred Albers, SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio
BOLTON’S FANTASY OUTLOOK: On his way. Arguably best among the rookies that didn't win in 2012. Went 21-for-28 with six top 10s and $1.774 million. Found a zone late, posting top fives in three of four starts to end the regular season. Amassed 28 starts, a total gamers would love to see him repeat but can't expect. Showcased a wonderful touch around greens -- ranked eighth in scrambling and sixth in sand saves -- a skill set that should prevent a sophomore slump. -- Rob Bolton, PGATOUR.COM Fantasy expert
