Furyk, Mickelson, Els, Among Early Commitments For Fifth Wachovia Championship
February 14, 2007
CHARLOTTE N.C. - Three of the top five players in the world are once again making plans to compete in the fifth Wachovia Championship, April 30-May 6 at Quail Hollow Club.
Defending champion Jim Furyk will return to Charlotte and attempt to become the first back-to-back champion in tournament history. However, the world's No. 2 player must negotiate a field of competitors and a golf course that has become one of the strongest combinations on the PGA TOUR.
One of those players will be Phil Mickelson, winner of last week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Mickelson, the world's fourth ranked player, will be competing in his third consecutive Wachovia Championship. He finished among the top ten in both 2004 and 2005.
South Africa's Ernie Els is scheduled to make his second appearance at the Wachovia Championship. Els- currently ranked fifth in the world- was tied for 38th in the 2006 Wachovia Championship.
"We are honored that these caliber of players are already looking ahead and making plans to come to the Wachovia Championship," said Executive Director Kym Hougham. "With over 70 days to go before our week on the PGA TOUR schedule, these early commitments support our feeling that a strong field will be competing here in May."
Tickets for the 2007 edition of the Wachovia Championship are on sale. A limited number of daily and weekly packages are available.
Ticket options include a Practice Pack that consists of daily tickets for Monday's Pro-Am along with Tuesday's practice day and the Wednesday Pro-Am for $25. Tickets for the first two rounds Thursday and Friday are $40 each and tickets for the final two rounds Saturday and Sunday are $50 each. Weekly books are also available for $140.
For the first time, the cost of parking at authorized tournament lots as well as shuttle service to and from Quail Hollow Club is included in the ticket price for the April 30-May 6 PGA TOUR event.
The general public may purchase tickets by visiting www.wachoviachampionship.com or by calling (800) 945-0777.
To accommodate families, children ages 12 and under are free with a paid adult admission (one child per paying adult).
Weekly ticket books include admission to all seven days of the tournament. With ticket books, the same person does not have to use the ticket each day, allowing family members, friends and business associates to share the cost of the event.
Proceeds from the 2007 Wachovia Championship will benefit Teach For America, a national education foundation that provides a corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit to teach for two years in underserved urban and rural public schools. In four years, the Wachovia Championship has donated $5.7 million to charities.
The Wachovia Championship's $6.3 million purse is one of the highest on the PGA TOUR, guaranteeing the winner in excess of $1 million. In 2005, the Wachovia Championship signed an agreement with the PGA TOUR to hold the event in Charlotte through the year 2010.
