    • New Tournament Course at Redstone Golf Club, site of 2006 Shell Houston Open, open for play

HOUSTON -- The new Tournament Course at Redstone Golf Club, which will host the 2006 Shell Houston Open, opened for public play on Aug. 3.

Designed by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones, the heavily wooded 7,422-yard, par-72 layout has been crafted espeically to meet the needs of Houston's PGA TOUR event. Improved spectator walkways, additional corporate hospitality opportunities on the 18th hole are just two of the enhancements geared to make the course more fan friendly.

The routing plan of the course gives spectators many options for viewing golf and allows for easy access to a number of holes in a short period of time. For instance, the 484-yard, par-4 18th hole (pictured above) and the 395-yard, par-4 1st hole are parallel.

PGA TOUR player David Toms served as a consultant on the project.  "Normally a TOUR player is not as involved in the design process, but I have had a lot of access and input," says Toms. "The course is challenging, but fair. There is a lot of variety so that not one type of player has an advantage, which is what we need on our tour now."

Houston Golf Association, which has been bringing PGA TOUR golf to the region since 1946, signed a contract in February of 2002 with The Redstone Companies to stage the Shell Houston Open at Redstone Golf Club beginning in 2003. Redstone Golf Management committed to build a course designed to host a PGA TOUR event as part of that initial agreement.

After three years on the Member Course at Redstone Golf Club during design and construction of the Tournament Course, the HGA is ready to unveil the new venue for the Shell Houston Open the week of April 17-23.

"Redstone continues to deliver on its promises to make the site of the Shell Houston Open and exceptional venue," says Steve Timms, Tournament Director and Executive Director of the Houston Golf Association. "Since we signed the contract in 2002, Redstone has continually shown its commitment to be the best. The 50 acres of on-site sponsor parking, plus the three-hole course for The First Tee (R) of Houston/Redstone, emphasizes why the Houston Golf Association relishes its partnership with The Redstone Companies."

The new tournament site will be free of real estate development. Only eight tournaments on the PGA TOUR schedule are played on non-resort venues with no housing on the course.

Only 10 other tournaments on the PGA TOUR schedule are played on daily fee courses. Previously Houston's PGA TOUR event was played on two other public courses -- Memorial Park (1947, 1951-1963) and the venue formerly known as the Tournament Players Course at The Woodlands (1985-2002).

Green fees are $125 and include cart, range balls and a forecaddie with each group. Tee times are available by calling 281-459-7820. Redstone Golf Club is located in northeast Houston at 5860 Wilson Road, near the Sam Houston Tollway and U.S. Highway 59, only minutes from George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
