Through the vision of Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew, a Malaysian business tycoon, and the expertise of the famous architect Robert Trent
Jones. Jr, The MINES Resort & Golf Club was painstakingly transformed from a wasteland and polished into a 246-acre, 18-hole
work of art in 1993. The green was left to mature for a year with maintenance of the highest standards.
Today, neighbouring lush, manicured greens and scenic fairways is a 150-acre lake that glistens when kissed by sunlight. The
MINES Golf Course is the centrepiece of a resort complex stretching across 1,000 acres and encompassing five million square
feet of interior space: home to a prestigious hotel, an exhibition centre, the only shopping mall with a canal, and the city's
only beach resort, among others.
The MINES Resort & Golf Club, also known as The Nation's Walk Of Fame', has played gracious host to both the Men's World
Cup Golf 1999, Women's World Cup Golf 2000 and the Carlsberg Malaysian Open 2003. From heads of state to champions, dignitaries
to celebrities, VIPs to royalty, The MINES Resort City has the singular distinction of being the most celebrated destination
in Malaysia for the rich, the eminent and the famous.
| Hole | Par | Yards | |
| 1 | 4 | 363 |
A short starting hole from an elevated tee. The drive is actually much tighter than it appears and often into prevailing wind. The ideal drive is to the left side of the fairway near the creek. This will leave an open approach at the green. A drive to the right will leave the player with a large tree and greenside bunker to negotiate. Depending on the pin position, this can be a difficult green to pull. |
| 2 | 3 | 170 |
An intimidating shot over a deep ravine. The hole is not as difficult as it appears. There is room short of the green and fairway to the left, but don't hit it to the right. Club selection will be important. |
| 3 | 5 | 527 |
The heavily vegetated hillside on the left must be avoided. However, a long shot down the right side can put a player in a position to reach in two, a long shot on the left side will shorten the hole slightly but may result in a blind shot from a low fairway valley. For the average player, the second shot must be accurate and well placed to avoid fairway bunkers and to allow for the optimum angle to the green. |
| 4 | 4 | 475 |
A soft low-profile hole playing over and adjacent to the wetland habitat areas with a densely wooded hill as a backdrop to the green. This slight dog-leg left hole requires little strategy, but precise execution. A long tee shot that avoids the left side bunker is required so that the player can have the shortest possible club onto this small green with a wetland hazard along the entire left side. |
| 5 | 4 | 460 |
This hole also plays along and through the open wetland area. The fairway is wide and the player can play to the left, but this will leave a very difficult approach over the bunkers. Playing a tee shot far to the left will leave an approach shot over or through a small cluster of palm trees. The ideal tee shot will be near the wetland on the right side. Such a tee shot will allow the player to hit a slight draw onto the green. |
| 6 | 4 | 371 |
Spectacular views from this elevated tee, a large lake can be seen in the distance behind the green. The fairway appears to be wide but the longer the tee shot, the narrow the hole becomes. The golfer must decide, on the tee, which club to use. This will be a very small green with severe trouble surrounding its perimeter. Therefore, the longer the drive, the greater the advantage. But avoid the deep right side bunkers and the left trees. |
| 7 | 3 | 190 |
This short hole is located in a self-contained valley with heavy vegetation surrounding. The hole plays from an elevated tee area into a large bowl area. The green will be long, but very narrow, with a deep pot bunker on the left side. Accuracy will be the key here, and if the wind blows, club selection will be difficult. The green has some strong undulation which require good chipping and putting. |
| 8 | 4 | 411 |
A long, uphill hole requiring length to reach in two. Although only 375m long, this hole will play like a very long Par 4 as it is uphill and often into the prevailing wind. The fairway is wide, but a shot missed to the right will find the ball in a deep swale with a blind shot to the green. The large green will require a solid approach, and good putting will be required. The large mound in the front right corner of the green will create a very difficult right side pin position. |
| 9 | 4 | 451 |
Spectacular panoramic views can be seen from the tee. This is a long downhill hole but often into the prevailing breeze. The drive is intimidating as the steep quarry cliff on the left will partially block the left half of the fairway. This is a wide double fairway with room on the right. However, a shot hit to the far right will leave the golfer with a blind shot with trees and bunkers to negotiate. The green has trouble tothe right and therefore favours an approach shot from the left side. A tee shot directly at the fairway bunker is the best line for all but the longest hitters. The green has subtle contours that creates many interesting pin positions. |
| 10 | 4 | 454 |
Another hole in a series of spectacular, scenic challenges. A medium hole with a downhill tee shot. The drive is to a generous landing area but any wind from left to right can make this drive scary. Long hitters must avoid the deep pot bunkers on the right centre of the fairway. The successful drive will leave the player a short to medium iron shot to the split level green with birdie potential. |
| 11 | 5 | 557 |
A dramatic and intimidating tee shot. The ideal drive is over a portion of the lake csarrying a sharp cliff on the far side. This appears to be much more difficult than it will prove to be. The shorter hitter can play safely to the right to minimize the carry, but will add considerable distance to the length of the hole. From the elevated fairway area the golfer can view the green tight against the hole. The hole is reachable in two but the second shot must be long and perfect. |
| 12 | 4 | 476 |
The longest Par 4 on the course. The elevated tees provide a view of the entire hole, and the wide driving area allows for a full rip with the driver. Fairway bunkers require the very long hitter to be more accurate, but a well struck shot into this area will reward the player with a middle iron onto the green. A fairway bunker short of the green requires those who choose a long iron of wood approach to negotiate this hazard. |
| 13 | 4 | 422 |
An accurate drive will be required to reach the landing area flanked by a wetland to the right. A mid to short iron approach to a well contoured green will challenge the golfer to avoid the wetland to the left. This will be a demanding hole, requiring long, straight shots from all skill levels. |
| 14 | 3 | 194 |
Although a short Par 3, this hole offers several challenges including club selection. Trees are plentiful, and placed to offer a variety of lengths and shot-making angles. Your shot must carry the narrow lake neck to reach the green. Wayward shots will find generous room to either side of the green. |
| 15 | 4 | 292 |
What a spectacular view from this tee! A complete panoramic view of the lake and golf course beyond. This is the shortest Par 4 on the course. You are faced with several options from the tee. A bold player can attempt to hit the driver and get the ball close to the green, but such a shot requires a long carry over water onto a small landing area. The longer and more difficult route to this small green surrounded by water is on the right with bunkers on the left. |
| 16 | 3 | 185 |
Perhaps the most dramatic, intimidating and most difficult of the Par 3s. a long carry over the large lake is required. The player can aim left but this too is a difficult shot and will result in a difficult chip to the green. A par on this hole will be a great score. The view over the entire length of the lake will make this among the most scenic on the course. |
| 17 | 5 | 523 |
The shortest of the Par 5s and certainly reachable in two by skilled players. The tee shot must be hit onto an elevated plateau fairway and near the right edge to cut some distance off the hole but too far right could result in a lost ball or unplayable lie on the step downslope. From this elevated decked fairway, the player has a magnificent panoramic view of several holes as well as the smaller green set atop the steep cliff edge. There is a lower side fairway some six meters below the green. To reach the green in two, the shot must carry all the way to the green surface and stop quickly before running In the deep, blind pot bunker behind the green. Most low handicap players will attempt the green in two. |
| 18 | 4 | 447 |
This hole is terraced into a side hill with spectacular views in all directions. The ideal tee shot will be along the right side near the quarry-like drop-off. A drive in this area will give the player the optimum angle of approach to the green. This hole is potential birdie and will produce some exciting finishes. |
