From the earliest days, Joe Hardy believed that 84 Lumber needed to be involved in the communities where the company operated
stores. This ranged from cash donations to supplying materials free of charge for community based projects. As
the company began to grow and open more stores, Hardy came into new towns donating $840 to a local charity during each
stores' grand opening celebration.
This practice, which continues today, is the basis of the 84 Lumber Building Hope initiative, and the
belief that it's our responsibility to help those individuals and organizations most in need, or that can make the
greatest positive impact.
In the past 50 years, 84 Lumber, through the philanthropy of Hardy and his daughter, 84 Lumber Company President Maggie
Hardy Magerko, has donated tens of millions of dollars in cash and materials to local, regional, national, and international charities.
These have ranged from local community groups, to chapters of the American Red Cross and United Way, to the national efforts
of Habitat for Humanity.
Since 2003, the 84 Lumber Classic has raised $4.3 million for local and regional charities, including $1.5 million during
the 2005 tourament and $1.2 million for Hurricane Katrina Relief. The contribution for Hurricane Katrina Relief was
a combined effort during tournament week of generous donations from players, sponsors, spectators, and volunteers, matched
dollar-for-dollar by 84 Lumber Company President, Maggie Hardy Magerko.
