When Jack Vickers promised a major change in golf tournaments on the PGA TOUR, he delivered one of the boldest innovations
in the history of the game: A revision of the old Stableford "point-par" sweepstakes.
Originally, what Vickers wanted was match play but he was told by almost everyone that wasn't practical. (He was proven
right, of course, by the almost immediate rise in popularity of The Ryder Cup and the ultimate decision to inaugurate The
President's Cup in 1994).
So Vickers dug into his history books and tapped into his own vast knowledge of the game, pulling out the Stableford System.
Actually, he and his brothers have often used the point-par scoring system in their own family games.
The INTERNATIONAL is a far cry from the 72-hole medal play event. The spirit of Stableford is alive because the players
giving chase can make up more ground on the leaders by playing aggressively, hoping to score 8 points for a double eagle,
5 for an eagle or 2 for a birdie.
Of course, there is always danger lurking on the 7,619-yard Jack Nicklaus layout course, which hands out minus-1 point
for bogey and minus-3 points for anything worse.
|
| The International Scoring |
- Double Eagle: 8 points
- Eagle: 5 points
- Birdie: 2 points
- Par: Even
- Bogey: minus-1 point
- Double Bogey or more: minus-3 points
