![]() Shell Oil Company has been the title sponsor for Houston's PGA TOUR stop since 1992 and charitable donations have been a big part of the relationship. Houston Golf Association golf-related activities have generated more than $44 million since 1992 when Shell Oil Company became title sponsor. At the 2006 tournament Shell Oil Company and Houston Golf Association officials announced a 5-year contract extension through 2012. Shell Oil Company and Houston Golf Association have focused on youth-oriented charities since the two became corporate partners. The most recent program involving the HGA and Shell Oil Company is The First Tee Houston/Redstone Chapter, located adjacent to HGA's offices. The First Tee Houston/Chapter, built on land donated by The Redstone Companies, features a three-hole, par-3 course and 6,720-square foot building. The building has been named the Dick Harmon Learning Center in honor of the longtime Houston teaching professional who passed away in February of 2006. Volunteerism is a key bonding agent for Shell Oil Company and the Houston Golf Association. Both Shell Oil and Houston Golf Association have received national awards from the Points of Light Foundation for outstanding volunteerism. Former President George Bush made a special dual presentation at the 2001 Shell Houston Open. The late Earl Elliott, 2000 PGA TOUR volunteer of the year, accepted the award on the behalf of the Houston Golf Association. Shell Oil Company remains extremely active at the tournament. Each year one hole is marshaled by Shell employees. |
