Northern Trust Open announces plans to
honor area military, veterans
Activities during tournament week part of Birdies for the Brave military outreach program
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - PGA TOUR and Northern Trust Open tournament officials will honor area military personnel and their families throughout tournament week with free admission, a special golf reception for veterans and a private hospitality venue. The 2011 Northern Trust Open will be held February 15-20 at the historic Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
"The military is very near and dear to my heart," said NBA legend Jerry West, executive director of the Northern Trust Open. "My closest brother, David, was killed in the Korean War when I was 12 years old, and that was certainly a life-altering experience for me. Anything that we can do through the Northern Trust Open to support local military men and women and their families - and show them how much we appreciate their service and sacrifice - makes me even more proud to be associated with this tournament. I look forward to spending some time with them during tournament week."
As part of the Birdies for the Brave program, the TOUR will provide all active duty, retired and reserve military members and their dependents with complimentary admission to the Northern Trust Open all week. A special military hospitality chalet - the Patriots' Outpost presented by the Annenberg Foundation - located on the 10th green at Riviera will provide military guests and local veterans with complimentary food and beverages and a relaxing venue for enjoying the tournament from Wednesday, February 16, through Sunday, February 20.
On Tuesday, February 15, the PGA TOUR will host a reception for hundreds of veterans served by the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. West will be joined by PGA TOUR players and caddies at the Fisher House on the grounds of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare Center (11301 Wilshire Boulevard) for a dedication ceremony, autograph session, live entertainment, and the opportunity for veterans to try and beat the scores of West and TOUR players in a miniature golf competition. Dinner will be provided compliments of Chick-fil-A.
On Wednesday morning, February 16, service members from all five branches of the military will serve as caddies on the 10th green during the Pro-Am. Saturday, February 19, will be "Military Appreciation Day" at the Northern Trust Open, with military caddies assisting TOUR players on the 1st and 10th tees, and a special Military Appreciation Ceremony at 3 p.m. located on the 18th green.
Birdies for the Brave (www.birdiesforthebrave.com) is a PGA TOUR Charities program dedicated to supporting and honoring the brave men and women of our U.S. Armed Forces and their families.
About the Northern Trust Open
What started as the Los Angeles Open is now the Northern Trust Open, one of the longest-running tournaments on the PGA TOUR. Debuting in 1926 at Los Angeles Country Club, the event had been staged at various courses throughout the Los Angeles area before permanently settling at Riviera Country Club in 1973. Outside of the major championships, the Northern Trust Open is the fourth-oldest event on TOUR, trailing only the BMW Championship, the Canadian Open and the Valero Texas Open. The 2010 Northern Trust Open raised $1.48 million for non-profit organizations in the Los Angeles area, bringing the total generated for Los Angeles charities since the event's inception to nearly $52 million.
