    • Nissan North America, Inc. extends sponsorship through 2006

    Dec. 4, 2001
LOS ANGELES --- Nissan North America, Inc., has extended its sponsorship of the Nissan Open through 2006.

The prior agreement was due to expire after the 2002 tournament. Nissan has been affiliated with the tournament since 1986 and title sponsor since 1989. The Nissan Open is the oldest civic-sponsored event on the PGA TOUR, launching in 1926.

When Robert Allenby defends his title Feb. 11-17, 2002 at Riviera Country Club, he and the rest of the outstanding 144-player international field will be playing for a record total purse of $3.7 million and a first prize of $666,000.

"We are delighted to continue the tremendous relationship we have enjoyed with Nissan North America, Inc.," said Nissan Open Tournament Director Tom Pulchinski. "Nissan continues to demonstrate its support for the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce and the community involvement programs it supports and to keep the tournament among the elite TOUR events."

"Nissan North America, Inc., is extremely pleased to extend its partnership with the LAJCC and the Nissan Open, one of the premiere events in golf," said John Gill, director of sports marketing for Nissan North America, Inc. "Our sponsorship of the Nissan Open is an integral part of our sports marketing portfolio and one that enables us to give back to community service organizations within the Greater Los Angeles area."

Total purse for the Nissan Open reached $1 million for the first time when Nissan assumed the title sponsorship in 1989, with Mark Calcavecchia capturing the $180,000 first prize.

The 2002 tournament marks the 40th time the event has been held at Riviera Country Club, which will celebrate its 76th year as a golf club. It was first held at Riviera in 1929.

Since its first involvement with professional golf, Nissan has expanded its sports marketing role with other programs, which have included sponsorship of the 1996 Olympic Games, the PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup and The Tradition (SENIOR PGA TOUR), as well as Warren Miller's ski films.

In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive styling, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing.
