The World Cup of Golf was first held in 1953. In 2000 the event became
part of the World Golf Championships organized by the International Golf
Federation of PGA Tours which is make up of the PGA TOUR, European Tour,
Japan Golf Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia, Sunshine Tour (South Africa) and the Asian Tour. The World Cup is golf's oldest worldwide team competition
and is often called golf's Olympics.
The World Cup's winners include some of the greatest names in the history of golf including Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Severiano Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els.
In all, 30 major championship winners have taken home the World Cup. The United States boasts the greatest number of wins with a total of 22. South Africa can lay claim to five victories. Spain and Australia have both won
on four occasions.
