SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Former British Open champion and 13-time winner on the PGA TOUR David Duval committed today to play in next week's Fry's Electronics Open, along with two-time PGA TOUR winners Jerry Kelly and Carl Pettersson. Three sponsor's exemptions have yet to be handed out, with the first five exemptions going to John Daly, Colt Knost, Brandel Chamblee, Niklas Lemke and Jeff Brehaut.
The Fry's Electronics Open field includes eight of the top-30 and 18 of the top-50 money winners on the 2007 PGA TOUR, including nine players currently among the top-50 on the Official World Golf Ranking and nine winners from the 2007 PGA TOUR season.
A full field of 132 players will compete for the $5 million purse and $900,000 first place check when the PGA TOUR returns to the Valley of the Sun Oct. 15-21, at Grayhawk Golf Club.
PGA TOUR members had until 5 p.m. (Eastern) today to commit to play in the Fry's Electronics Open. Eligible players are assigned one of 34 PGA TOUR priority rankings based on past performances on the PGA TOUR. Mickelson is the highest ranked player on the Official World Ranking to commit to the field, while Baddeley, the 19th ranked player on the Official World Golf Ranking, is the next highest. Stewart Cink (23), Aaron Oberholser (25th), Tim Clark (30th), Robert Allenby (38th), Mark Calcavecchia (41st), Stephen Ames (43rd) and Mike Weir (49th) are the other players in the field who rank among the top-50 on the World Golf Ranking list.
Other notable commitments have been received from 2003 Masters winner Mike Weir; 10-time PGA TOUR winner and 1997 British Open champ and recent Valero Texas Open Champion Justin Leonard; five-time PGA TOUR winner and 1998 Phoenix Open champion Jesper Parnevik; five-time PGA TOUR winner and 1999 Phoenix Open champion Rocco Mediate; 2006 FBR Open winner J.B. Holmes; 2006 Ryder Cup member J.J. Henry; 2002 PGA Championship winner Rich Beem; and up and coming golfers such as Brandt Snedeker (17th on money list) and Bubba Watson (first on TOUR in driving distance).
The Fry's Electronics Open is part of the PGA TOUR's Fall Series and will feature a full-field (132 players), four-day tournament with a $5 million purse and $900,000 payout to the winner. The Fry's Electronics Open will be played Oct. 15-21, 2007, at Grayhawk Golf Club, and the tournament will be televised all four days on The Golf Channel.
