Q&A: Rutledge wants to be mortgage free in the future

Editor’s note: This is the xxxxx in a series of Q&As with the 22 Nationwide Tour graduates. In this edition, PGATOUR.com’s Dave Lagarde spoke with Jim Rutledge, winner of the 2006 ING New Zealand PGA Championship, who earned his PGA TOUR card for 2007 when he finished 14th on the Nationwide Tour money list.

PGATOUR.com: Tell me three things not related to golf that you consider must-dos before you’re on the wrong side of the divot?

RUTLEDGE: Be mortgage free. Watch my son, Ryan, grow up and become successful at whatever his career may be. Catch a blue marlin.

PGATOUR.com: What is your wildest golf dream?

RUTLEDGE: That PGA TOUR Qualifying School parallels the movie Groundhog Day.

PGATOUR.com: What aspect of the Nationwide Tour will you miss most next season?

RUTLEDGE: All the players and tournament officials who I have befriended.

PGATOUR.com: What was your welcome-to-professional-golf moment?

RUTLEDGE: I spent half of my first check ($127.50) on a round of drinks. My peers convinced me that was the customary thing to do.

PGATOUR.com: You’ve been granted a 60-minute sit-down with any figure in the world of golf, living or dead. What’s your first question -- and to whom would you address it?

RUTLEDGE: I’d like to talk to Byron Nelson. I’d want to know what was his frame of mind and practice routine during his incredible win streak.

PGATOUR.com: Describe the menu, from soup to nuts, of your next title celebration dinner. And name the wine pairings.

RUTLEDGE: Fresh crab, bone in filet, baked potato and my wife’s MacIntosh torte. And I’d prefer an ice-cold beer.

PGATOUR.com: Name five songs in your iPod.

RUTLEDGE: I honestly do not own one.

PGATOUR.com: Other than winning a tournament, what would make next year a success?

RUTLEDGE: To make the Top 125 and successfully keep my playing status for the 2008 season.

PGATOUR.com: The first time you're paired with Tiger, what would you say to break the ice?

RUTLEDGE: Hi there. I turned pro about the same time you were born.

PGATOUR.com: Who would you most like to hit balls next to, and why?

RUTLEDGE: My father, Grant, and my father-in-law, Tom. They both passed away a few years ago. They were my biggest fans.
