Q&A: Johnson Wagner talks about his jump to the TOUR

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of Q&A's with the 22 Nationwide Tour graduates. In this edition, PGATOUR.com spoke with Johnson Wagner who finished second on the Nationwide Tour money list in 2006 after recording two victories. He's making his first appearance on the PGA TOUR next season.

PGATOUR.com: Tell me three things not related to golf that you consider must-dos before you’re on the wrong side of the divot?

WAGNER: Go to a Super Bowl. Climb Mount Everest, although I probably won’t do it. Go skydiving.

PGATOUR.com: What is your wildest golf dream?

WAGNER: Winning the United States Open at Bethpage Black.

PGATOUR.com: What aspect of the Nationwide Tour will you miss most next season?

WAGNER: I’ll really miss the close-knit family style that is out here, knowing everybody and getting to talk to friends whenever I’m in the locker room or the putting green.

PGATOUR.com: What was your welcome-to-professional-golf moment?

WAGNER: Winning New York’s Metropolitan Open at Bethpage Black in my first professional tournament.

PGATOUR.com: You’ve been granted a 60-minute sit-down with any figure in the world of golf, living or dead. What’s your first question -- and to whom would you address it?

WAGNER I’d love to ask Byron Nelson what was going through his mind when he won 11 consecutive tournaments.

PGATOUR.com: Describe the menu, from soup to nuts, of your next title celebration dinner. And name the wine pairings.

WAGNER: It wouldn’t be fancy. Probably a good steak on the grill with twice-baked potato and a nice bottle of Pinot Noir, likely from David Bruce.

PGATOUR.com: Name five songs in your iPod.

WAGNER: Paul Simon’s Graceland. Wide Spread Panic’s Good People. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Under the Bridge. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Tuesday’s Gone. The Grateful Dead’s Tennessee Jed.

PGATOUR.com: Other than winning a tournament, what would make next year a success?

WAGNER Qualifying for the Tour Championship.

PGATOUR.com: The first time you're paired with Tiger, what would you say to break the ice?

WAGNER: I’m sure I’d say, ‘Hi,’ but probably not much else. I’d let my game do the talking.

PGATOUR.com: Who would you most like to hit balls next to, and why?

WAGNER: That’s easy: Tiger. I’ve already done it at the 2004 United States Open at Shinnecock. He’s the best player in the game and likely the best player ever. It’s fun to compare yourself to the best.
