LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Rich Barcelo shot an 8-under 64 on Thursday in chilly conditions at PGA West to take a three-stroke lead over Australia's Paul Gow after the second round of the PGA TOUR's 108-hole National Qualifying Tournament.

Barcelo, from Reno, Nev., has reached the PGA TOUR just once in eight previous qualifying tries, has a 9-under 135 total. He played the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course on Thursday after opening with a 71 on the Stadium Course.

The top 30 and ties after six rounds will receive PGA TOUR cards for next season. The next 50 will get Nationwide Tour cards, and the remaining players in the 163-man field will receive conditional Nationwide status.

Barcelo, who played the PGA TOUR in 2004, had eight birdies in his bogey-free round on the cool day. The start of play was delayed for 40 minutes because of frost with temperatures in the low 30s in the morning.

Gow had a 68 on the Nicklaus course.

Steven Bowditch (68), George McNeill (66), Cameron Beckman (64) and Brian Bateman (65) were 5 under, and Steve Allan (71), Bob May (65), John Mallinger (71), Bob Heintz (71) and Tom Johnson (68) were 4 under.

Two-time U.S. Open winner Lee Janzen, winless on TOUR since 1998, shot a 72 on the Stadium Course, leaving him tied for 44th at 1 over.

"I'm just trying to learn some things this week," said the 42-year-old Janzen, an eight-time TOUR winner who was 146th on the money list this year with $524,198. "You have to play every hole and every swing and learn something that can make you better."

Duffy Waldorf, a four-time TOUR winner, was tied for 21st at 1 under after a 68 on the Nicklaus course. Chris Riley, a member of the 2004 U.S. Ryder Cup team, was tied for 153rd at 11 under after a 72. He opened with an 83.
