D.J. Trahan, who finished tied for 12th in his first appearance at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic in 2005, picked up where he left off with an opening-round 65. It was his fourth round in the 60s in five rounds at Annandale GC and followed a final-round 65 in 2005. •First-round leader D.J. Trahan holds a two-stroke lead after 18 holes. The last time the first-round leader at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic led by as many as two strokes was in 1987, when Mike West fired a 62 to lead John Inman and Tony Sills by two. •Good news or bad news for D.J. Trahan?…A first-round leader has gone on to win twice in the last six years at Annandale GC. Steve Lowery shared the lead with Frank Lickliter II in 2000 prior to beating Skip Kendall in a playoff. Three years later, John Huston shared the first-round lead with Carlos Franco and Hidemichi Tanaka prior to defeating Brenden Pappas by a stroke. •2005 winner Heath Slocum saw his streak of 48 consecutive holes without a bogey at Annandale Golf Club end on the par-4 sixth hole on Thursday. Slocum came into the event with 43 straight holes without a bogey. Meanwhile, Shaun Micheel, who also came into the event with a streak of 43 consecutive holes without a bogey, extended his to 49 before a bogey on his seventh hole, the par-4 16th stopped his streak. •Glen Day has posted his last 13 rounds at Annandale GC at par or better, including his last 12 below par. Day has finished inside the top 20 at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic in each of the last three years -- tied for seventh in 2003, tied for third in 2004 and tied for 17th in 2005. •After finishing outside the top 150 for the first time in his 12 years on the PGA TOUR in 2005, Glen Day has split his 13th season between the Nationwide Tour (26th on money list, 7 of 15 cuts) and PGA TOUR (243rd on money list, 2 of 11 cuts). Much of his success on the Nationwide Tour this year can be attributed to two runner-up finishes at the Xerox Classic and the Albertson’s Boise Open presented by First Health. •Brad Faxon is making his fourth start in the Southern Farm Bureau Classic. He’s made the cut all three times and never finished lower than tied for 17th (1999). His other two appearances resulted in two top-fives -- tied for fourth in 2000 and tied for fifth in 2002. •Two-time Southern Farm Bureau Classic winner Fred Funk continued his fine play at Annandale GC with an opening round 69. Funk leads the tournament with six career top-10s, including his wins in 1998 and 2004. With his 69 on Thursday, he has now posted his last nine rounds at the course in the 60s and last 17 rounds below par dating back to 1998. •Fred Funk has opened with a round in the 60s in seven of his 11 starts, including today’s round. In the previous six, he has never finished lower than tied for 11th and has finished inside the top 10 five times. •Ted Purdy continued his strong play of late with an opening-round, 4-under 68. After missing seven straight cuts from the U.S. Open through the Canadian Open, he finished tied for fourth at the 84 LUMBER Classic and tied for 21st at the Valero Texas Open the past two weeks. Over the last three weeks, he has opened with rounds of 66, 65 and 68. With two holes to play, Purdy sat at 4-under par but double bogeyed the par-4 17th hole after hitting his third shot into the water. He came back with an eagle on the par-5 18th when he chipped in from 68 feet. •Ted Purdy also must like the new Bermuda grass greens installed here at Annandale GC this summer, as he needed just 21 putts to get through round one. A big difference from his season average of 29.78, ranked T180 on TOUR. •If history at Annandale CC tells a story, it’s that one player will not run away with the title. The largest margin of victory was three strokes by Brian Henninger in 1999. In fact, five of the last six tournaments have been decided by one stroke or less. •There were three bogey-free rounds on Thursday -- Nick Watney in the morning and John Huston and Henrik Bjornstad in the afternoon. •Donnie Hammond withdrew prior to round one due to an illness and was replaced by Spike McRoy. Hidemchi Tanaka withdrew after round one due to a knee injury. Craig Perks withrew after round one. •The first-round scoring average of 73.030 was the highest first-round scoring average at Annandale GC since the tournament became an official TOUR event in 1994 and just the third time since then that the first-round scoring average has been above par. It was also the second-highest scoring average for any round since 1994 sitting behind the 73.632 during round two in 1999. Annandale GC installed Bermuda grass greens this summer in place of the bent-grass greens. •There were fewer rounds in the 60s, below par and at par-or-better in round one on Thursday than in any other round one at Annandale GC since the tournament became an official PGA TOUR event in 1994.
