Sandy, UT -- Bryce Molder fired a second consecutive 8-under 64 to storm to a five-shot lead after the second round of the Nationwide Tour's $475,000 Utah Energy Solutions Championship. At 16-under 128, Molder’s five-shot advantage over Jeff Quinney (67) is the widest 36-hole margin of the season and just one shy of David Sutherland’s lead here in 2001. Gavin Coles (64) -- the winner of last week’s Legend Financial Group Classic -- headlines a group of four players at 10-under 134, including 2006 Johnnie Walker Classic winner Kevin Stadler (67), Craig Lile (69) and Scott Petersen (67). “You don’t normally go out and think 64 on a course like this,” said Molder, a 27-year-old native of Harrison, AR. “The conditions were perfect and I kept making my putts. So that adds up to a 64.” Molder fashioned his second consecutive bogey-free round at the par-72 Willow Creek Country Club, with birdies coming on Nos. 1, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 16 and 17. “I didn’t just stripe it today,” said Molder, currently No. 61 on the official money list. “I hit some poor shots, but so far I’ve hit poor shots in the right place.” Molder is seeking his first career victory on the Nationwide Tour, after enjoying a distinguished career at Georgia Tech that ended with his graduation in 2001. He is keeping the proper amount of perspective, however, as he heads into the weekend. “It is comforting (to have a five-shot lead) and it is uncomforting because I’ve never been in that position before,” said Molder. “You like to be ahead but there’s a lot of golf still out there. It is like being ahead after two quarters of basketball.” Quinney began his day with an eagle on the par-5 10th hole -- thanks to a 40-foot bomb -- and never looked back on his way to a second consecutive round in the 60s (66-67). “I’m just really happy with how I hit it yesterday and excited for today’s round,” said Quinney, who hit 11 of 13 fairways and 12 of 18 greens in regulation. “I got the round off to a quick start with an eagle on the first hole. I’m taking advantage of the par-5s this week which is a big key to my success.” Quinney is looking to wipe away the painful memories of a final-round 5-over 76 last week at the Legend Financial Group Classic after entering the final day just two off the lead. Despite the final round, his tie for 13th place finish still gave him his ninth top-25 finish in his last 11 starts. “I was ticked off last Sunday,” said Quinney, currently No. 5 on the money list. “I lost all momentum on Sunday. I had no swing. But luckily I found my swing again on the practice range earlier this week.” Second Round News & Notes: The cut came at 4-under-par 140 with 60 professionals and one amateur (Gipper Finau) advancing to the weekend … Gipper Finau (16 years, 20 days) becomes the youngest player in Nationwide Tour history to make the cut, breaking the former mark set by Sean Harlingten (16 years, 9 months, 13 days) at the 2003 Mark Christopher Charity Classic.
