NAKHABINO, Russia -- Alejandro Canizares of Spain shot a record 22-under 266 to win the Russian Open on Sunday and take his first European Tour title.

Canizares made seven birdies in the final round to win by four strokes over runner-up David Drysdale of Scotland, who shot 69 for an 18-under 270 at Moscow's Le Meridien Golf and Country Club.

"I didn't expect to win at all. I was confident in my abilities but I didn't think my first victory would come so quickly," Canizares said.

Defending champion Mikael Lundberg of Sweden, who had a hole-in-one on the 197-yard, par-3 8th hole, tied Irishman Gary Murphy for third place - at 17 under.

Canizares was leading by one stroke before he hit a short chip from the rough on the par-4, 7th hole and bogeyed. Drysdale birdied that hole to overtake the Spaniard.

Canizares then birdied two last holes on the front nine, and Drysdale opened with a birdie on the back nine, to stay level at 19 under.

Drysdale - who repeatedly missed a series of birdies with close-call putts - then went behind after a bogey on the par-3, 11th hole.

"I played all right today. I just didn't make any putts," Drysdale said. "But to be honest, some of the iron shots he (Canizares) had today, were fantastic."

Canizares, who turned pro just two months ago, birdied two of his last three holes.

Canizares, the 23-year-old son of former Ryder Cup winner Jose-Maria Canizares, beat the tournament's previous top score - a 19-under-par 269.

The Russian Open became a fully fledged European Tour event this year for the first time in its 13-year history with $1 million in prize money.
