The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies this week, as Nationwide Tour players get ready to take the stage at the 7th annual Northeast Pennsylvania Classic. Glenmaura National Golf Club, located just outside of Scranton, PA in Moosic, will play host to the field of 156 players, including last week’s winner Kevin Stadler. With his Xerox Classic title, Stadler (son of PGA TOUR star Craig “The Walrus” Stadler) became the 48th player in Nationwide Tour history to celebrate at least three wins. Joining Stadler at the top of the field is the Nationwide Tour's reigning golden boy, Johnson Wagner, who leads the money race with $329,450. Wagner stands to earn a "battlefield promotion" to the PGA TOUR if he pulls off his third win of the 2006 season. Meandering through the Pocono Mountain range in Pennsylvania, the par-71 Glenmaura course features natural wetlands throughout and is framed by incredible views. PGA TOUR Champion, Larry Mize, served as design consultant on the 6,990 yard course which played to a stroke average of 71.584 last year. 2005 champ Greg Kraft made his way in the Nationwide Tour winner's circle for the first time at last year's tournament. The win marked the end of a 12 year-long dry spell spanning from his last win at the 1993 Deposit Guaranty Classic on the PGA TOUR. Though Kraft will not join the field this week, two previous event winners will- Jeff Hart (2000) and Jason Hill (2001). Last year’s runner-up Tim O’Nealwill return to the site of his best career finish for another go at Glenmaura. O’ Neal is in strong contention for a solid end of the year finish- after logging five top 25 finishes so far this season he is ranked 46th. He’ll jump to the latter half of the top 20 if he takes home this week’s $85,500 first place check. Paul Sheehan kicked off this season with a win at the Jacob's Creek Open in his native Australia and a second place finish at the Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship in April. Despite competing in less than half of Nationwide Tour events this season (Sheehan also competes on the Australasian Tour), he is still ranked #6 on the money list with $216, 407 and is the Tour's leading player on the green with a putting average of 1.719. Next up on the Nationwide Tour is the National Mining Association Pete Dye Classic which kicks off August 14 in Bridgeport, WV. |
