If you didn't know any better you'd think the erstwhile assistant to 2005 U.S. Presidents Cup captain Jack Nicklaus was trying to order a Ryder Cup uniform. Three placings in the top six in his last half-dozen starts have pushed him to 23rd in Ryder Cup points. That's not exactly on the bubble but it's some of his best play in two summers. Plus, prior to last year's missed cut in the Buick Open he'd tied for sixth, 12th and 4th at Warwick Hills.

He missed the cut at the British Open and has kind of lulled his way through the last few months. He tied for second here last year. Time to step up and secure that Ryder Cup spot.

Sean O'Hair
He tied for eighth at Warwick Hills in his debut, and he's returns to Grand Blanc this week full of enthusiasm and enjoying the game again. O'Hair has a new teacher and he's back to playing more by feel rather than letting the mechanics dominate his outlook. A string of solid, if not flashy performances that include a tie for 14th at the Open Championship show O'Hair's on the right track.

He had his chances here two years ago, losing by a stroke to Vijay Singh, but he hasn't exactly been playing much of late and his last-hole blowup at the British Open didn't indicate a player working off a lot of confidence. Still, Big D has the potential to contend at any time, any place.

Heath Slocum
With an average approach of 29 feet, Slocum ranks 10th on TOUR in proximity to the hole. He is also sixth in driving accuracy and tied for 17th in GIR percentage. Last year he finished tied for eighth at the Buick Open and he has finished in the top-15 in three of his last five starts.

He may not be a popular pick for the Ryder Cup team -- his ascent to 10th on the strength of his win at the B.C. Open has some people grumbling about the points system -- but he's playing well, has a game that suits this course and another good showing could really tweak the naysayers as he climbs up the Ryder Cup standings list.
