Loren Roberts won his second senior major championship Sunday (2005 JELD-WEN Tradition) and became the first player since Hale Irwin last year to claim four titles on the Champions Tour in a season. The victory was also Robert's fifth overall on the circuit in his 20th career start. •Roberts' 5-over 75 Sunday was the highest finish by a winner on the Champions Tour since Irwin won the 1998 Las Vegas Senior Classic with a 3-over 75 at the TPC Summerlin in the last round. It was the highest finish by a winner in a senior major championship since Simon Hobday had a 4-over 75 in the last round of the 1994 U.S. Senior Open at Pinehurst #2. •Roberts picked up 588 points to vault past Jay Haas into first place in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race. Points are doubled for all major championships on the Champions Tour. Roberts now leads the Charles Schwab Cup race with 2,357 total points. Jay Haas picked up 114 Schwab Cup points this week and is now in second place with 2,135 points. At the end of the official season, the points leader will earn a $1-million annuity from Charles Schwab. The Charles Schwab Cup is designed to recognize the Champions Tour's leading player. The program awards both top finishes and week-in/week-out consistency at all official/Charles Schwab Cup events. •Roberts earned a check for $293,981 and moved past Jay Haas into the top spot on the 2006 money list with $1,783,972 in 14 starts. In 13 events, Haas now has earned $1,578,010 this year on the Champions Tour.
• •Dick Mast's 67 was the low score of the day and he played his final two rounds on the Ailsa course at the Westin Turnberry Resort in a remarkable 3-under 137 total, one shot better than his first 36 holes in ideal scoring weather. Mast was T17 through the first two rounds and eventually placed solo third, his best in a senior major championship and his best performance overall on the Champions Tour since he T3 at the 2002 Turtle Bay Championship in Hawaii.

•Last year at Royal Aberdeen, both •Larratt's ace was the ninth on the Champions Tour this year and the circuit has now had at least one hole-in-one in four straight events. •The field scoring average Sunday was 73.90 compared to 76.28 Saturday, 71.91 on Friday and 72.25 on Thursday. The cumulative stroke average on the par-70 Ailsa course at Turnberry this year was 73.58 compared to 76.592 last year at Royal Aberdeen.

as the most difficult, yielding just two birdies (John Jacobs, •Sunday's playoff was the seventh in the Senior British Open Championship's 20-year history and third in the last four years. Roberts has now won both of his senior majors in overtime. He defeated Dana Quigley on the second hole of a playoff at the JELD-WEN Tradition last year. •Hale Irwin's 72-hole total of 5–over-par 285 was good enough to best Graham Marsh by seven strokes for the Fred Daly Award, signifying the leading player in this year's championship over the age of 60. For his efforts, Irwin received 3,000 pounds sterling. •Americans have now won the last four Senior British Opens. Tom Watson won twice, 2003 and 2005, while Pete Oakley won in 2004. •Roberts and Haas are the only two players to finish among the top-10 in the Champions Tour first four major championships of the year. •In addition to winning this week in Scotland, Roberts finished T3 at the Ford Senior Players Championship, T8 at the U.S. Senior Open and fifth at the Senior PGA Championship. Haas won the Senior PGA Championship in a playoff with Brad Bryant and then finished T8 at the U.S. Senior Open, T3 at the Ford Senior Players Championship and T6 at the Senior British Open. |
