Notes: Roberts still bogey-free, still on top

Loren Roberts is the only player in the field who has not made a bogey over his first 36 holes at Turnberry this year. He and Argentina’s Eduardo Romero stand at 10-under 130 through 36 holes, one stroke lower than Carl Mason’s two-round total here in 2003. Three years ago, Mason led D.A. Weibring and Tom Kite by one stroke after 36 holes.

Eduardo Romero and Don Pooley both posted 7-under 63s today, the low rounds of the tournament thus far. Romero finished tied for ninth in last year’s Senior British Open at Royal Aberdeen and tied for second at the 2004 Senior British Open at Royal Portrush. After carding 6-over 76 yesterday, Pooley improved 13 strokes today thanks to a pair of eagles, his best round on the Champions Tour since he posted a 9-under 63 at the MasterCard Championship at Hualalai in his first round of the 2006 season.

Hale Irwin, the Champions Tour’s all-time victory leader with 44 official titles, barely made the 36-hole cut, running his streak of cuts made in the three Champions Tour majors that reduce their fields after 36 holes to 25 consecutive. Irwin finished 36 holes at 4-over 144, right on the number. Irwin’s last missed cut on the PGA TOUR came at the 2004 PGA Championship after a pair of 73s.

With ideal weather conditions again today, the field scoring average on the par-70 Ailsa Course at the Westin Turnberry Resort was 71.91 today compared to 72.25 yesterday. Three years ago on Friday at Turnberry, the field averaged 70.81. There were 31 rounds in the 60s today compared to 20 on Thursday.

A total of 78 players made the 36-hole cut of 4-over 144. Last year at Royal Aberdeen, 79 players made the cut at 15-over-par 157, the second highest cut score ever in an official Champions Tour event. At the 1984 U.S. Senior Open at the par-70 Oak Hill Country Club, the 36-hole cut came at 17-over-par 157. When the Senior British Open was played here in 2003, 77 players made the cut at 4-over 144.

After carding a 3-over 73 yesterday, defending champion Tom Watson improved with a 3-under 67 today. Watson stands 10 strokes back at the halfway point and will need a big charge on the weekend if he hopes to defend his title and win at Turnberry for a third time in his career.

Loren Roberts’ record on the Champions Tour when he’s the leader/co-leader after two rounds:

Tournament Finish	36 Hole Score To Par Final Score
2006 ACE Group Classic Win -11 67-66-69--202
2006 Turtle Bay Champ. Win -12 66-66-72--204
2005 Charles Schwab Cup Champ. T5 -6 69-69-70-70--278
2005 U.S. Senior Open T2 -9 66-67-69-73--27

70-year-old Gary Player, the only three-time winner of the Senior British Open, also made the cut on the number. Player, however, is not the oldest to make a cut in any senior major. 78-year-old Fred Haas made the cut at the 1994 Senior PGA Championship at PGA National. 73-year-old Christy O’Connor of Ireland made the cut in the 1998 Senior British Open at Royal Portrush.

The 431-yard par-4 8th hole played as the most difficult today with a stroke average of 4.390. Only four players made a birdie on the hole today (Tom Kite, Carl Mason, Andy Bean and Gavan Levenson).

John Bland withdrew before the start of the round with an injured left hip. Bland shot 1-under 69 on Thursday.
