• David Edwards’ 9-under-par, bogey-free, 63 was not only the course record at The Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate but was also his best round since joining the Champions Tour in April. Edwards last shot 63 in the second round of last year’s B.C. Open on the PGA TOUR. Edwards has sole possession of the first-round lead for the first time in his Champions Tour career. The ace was the fifth on the Champions Tour this year and the eighth in tournament history, but was the first here in Kansas City since the 2003 tournament. Wadkins’ hole-in-one was also the 10th of his career, but was his first as a member of the Champions Tour. • After posting a 4-under 68 today, Gil Morgan is now a cumulative 30-under par over his last seven rounds on the Champions Tour. Morgan’s run of seven straight rounds in the 60s, a 2006 best on the Champions Tour, started when he picked up his first victory of the year, and 24th career title on the Champions Tour, at the Allianz Championship on June 4. He then finished tied for third at the Commerce Bank Championship on Long Island last week. • Tom Jenkins, the runner-up at the Commerce Bank Championship, holed a shot from the fairway for an eagle for the second consecutive week. During the second round on the Red Course at Eisenhower Park, Jenkins capped a run of four straight birdies and an eagle by holing a 7-iron shot from 158 yards at No. 6. Today at The Nicklaus Club at LionsGate, Jenkins made birdies on the third and fourth holes before holing a 6-iron second shot from 175 yards on No. 5. He then proceeded to make another birdie on the next hole and wound up with a 7-under 65 today, his fourth consecutive round in the 60s this year. • Allen Doyle, a two-time winner in Kansas City, saw his streak of consecutive par/better rounds in this event end at 18 straight after posting a 1-over 73 today. • Tom Watson’s run of bogey-free holes in this event ended at 44 straight with a 4 at the par-3 second hole. The run started on the 12th hole at The National Golf Club of Kansas City on Saturday of the weather-shortened 2004 event. Watson ended up with a 1-under 71. • R.W. Eaks and his amateur partner, David Arbesman, lead the pro-am portion of this event with a team score of 15 under. Jim Colbert and his grandson, Curtis Yonke, are in second place with a team score of 14-under 58. • Singer Vince Gill, a scratch player who’s in the event this week with good friend David Eger, had eight natural birdies in his round and the pro-am team finished at 8-under 64. • Craig Stadler and Bruce Summerhays both only had 23 putts today. Stadler’s 2-under 70 included 11 one-putts. Summerhays’ round of 69 included just nine putts on the front nine with chip-ins at the par-5 fourth hole and the par-4 fifth hole. • Four players hit all 14 fairways today -- Graham Marsh, Mark McNulty, Rick Rhoden and Des Smyth. • Loren Roberts’ 1-over 73 today marked the first time he’s shot a first-round score over par on the Champions Tour in 11 official appearances in 2006. • Defending champion Dana Quigley opened with a 5-under 67, his fifth consecutive round in the 60s at this event. • The 76-man field averaged 71.395 today compared to 70.868 on Friday last year. A total of 38 players finished under par compared to 48 in the opening round last year. • Since this event moved to Kansas City in 1991, eight of 15 first-round leaders/co-leaders went on to win. |
