Two players had very similar stats from tee to green in the first round of the Booz Allen Classic, except in one very important area -- proximity to the hole and this made all the difference on the greens. Ben Curtis and Robert Damron hit the same number of fairways and greens in round one, had similar driving distance stats and both successfully converted their one scrambling attempt. However, Damron recorded a 3-under 68 in the first round, whereas Curtis posted a career best 62. Prior to ShotLink this difference would probably been solely attributed to Curtis' superior performance on the greens as he needed six less putts than Damron to complete his round. While Curtis did putt very well, a good part of Curtis' performance on the greens should be attributed to the fact that he averaged about six feet closer to the pin on his approach shots than Damron.
