Phil Mickelson
Yes, he threw away the U.S. Open and a chance at his third major
in a row and the Mickel-slam, but he's still the most consistent player
in the game this year. Lefty won the BellSouth Classic and Masters
back-to-back and had a chance at history -- missing most every fairway
in the final round -- until the 72nd hole at Winged Foot. This hurts,
but he'll bounce back. The talk at Hoylake will still be a budding
rivalry with Tiger.

Phil Mickelson
Without question. He won his second straight major at the Masters and contended until the 72nd hole at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship winner Geoff Ogilvy was another strong candidate, but even he admitted to be surprised by winning his first major championship at Winged Foot. Look for Lefty to come back strong at Royal Liverpool in the Open Championship.

Even though he had that, um, unfortunate incident on the 18th hole at Winged Foot, he was still far and away the best player on the planet over the first half of the season. In fact, after the way he's played this season, you could make the case he's the best player on the planet period.

He was the best in the first quarter and he filled whatever void there was when Tiger Woods went on his sabbatical to grieve the passing of his father. |

Geoff Ogilvy
All Geoff Ogilvy has done this season is win two of the biggest events on TOUR -- the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship and the U.S. Open; record 10 top-25 finishes in 15 starts, including finishing in the top 20 at the Masters; earn nearly twice as much as he did in all of 2005; and move from 50th to eighth in the Official World Golf Ranking. Those would be pretty impressive results and there is still half a season to go.
