OBERWALTERSDORF, Austria -- Markus Brier withstood a surge from Soren Hansen on Sunday to win the BA-CA Austrian Open by three shots, becoming the first Austrian winner on the European Tour. Brier, a one-shot overnight leader, had a 3-under 68 to total 266, while Denmark's Hansen shot a 65. England's Simon Dyson (71) finished third at 14-under 270. Both players were at 15 under at the 11th hole after Hansen carded four straight birdies. Brier then recorded three birdies as Hansen bogeyed the 16th to virtually concede the event. "It's always been my goal to win my first European Tour event here at Fontana in front of my family and friends," Brier said. "Only after the 17th hole, which I played quite defensively, I felt that I couldn't lose it. I just had to keep my concentration. Nice to finish it off with a birdie on the 18th." Brier had won the Austrian Open as a challenger event in 2002 and 2004. Richard Green of Australia ended up fourth, scoring an eagle and seven birdies to equal the tournament-best with an 8-under 63. Gregory Havret of France also had a 63, shooting nine birdies to total 6-under 278 after improving by 15 strokes on his third round. ©The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. |
