Notes: Friday's delay longest of season

The six hour and nine minute delay during the day was the longest of the season to date, topping the four hour and 18 minute delay during round three of the Masters Tournament.

The first round, which was suspended Thursday at 6:35 p.m. due to a dangerous weather situation, came to a finish at 10:13 a.m. Friday for the 30 remaining players. Unfortunately, 12 minutes later (10:25 a.m.) the second round, which had begun at 8:00 a.m. was stopped due to heavy rain and play was delayed for six hours and nine minutes until play resumed again at 4:34 p.m. Forty-one of the 106 players in the field had teed off prior to the delay.

The total rainfall for Friday was .85 inches which, along with the .4 inches overnight, gave the Muirfield Village Golf Club course an accumulation of 1.25 inches.

Second-round play was called for the day at 8:48 p.m. due to darkness. The last player (Adam Scott) finished up his hole at 9:09. There were 70 players left on the course to complete their second round. Round two will resume at 8:00 a.m. Saturday with the third round to follow at approximately 1:30 p.m. with players starting in threesomes off of both the Nos. 1 and 10 tees.

Ernie Els is now 13 for 13 in making the cut at the Memorial Tournament. Els posted rounds of 74-70 to sit in a tie for 35th heading into Saturday’s third round. He is one of four players in tournament history to have played in the event at least 10 times and never missed a cut.

Although the second round is not complete, it looks like Jim Furyk and Ernie Els have made their 13th and 11th consecutive cuts at the Memorial Tournament. The two were tied for 35th at even par and finished with their second rounds. Els ties Lanny Wadkins for fourth on the tournament list for most consecutive cuts made, while Furyk moves from a tie for 10th to solo 10th. Els also increase his PGA TOUR-leading consecutive cut streak to 34.

Should Carl Pettersson, the co-leader when play was suspended due to darkness, retain his lead at the end of the round, it would be the third time in his career that he has held/shared the second-round lead on the PGA TOUR. The winner of one PGA TOUR event, the 2005 Chrysler Championship, has never won after holding/sharing the 36-hole lead and has finished in a tie for 34th in his two appearances in Dublin, Ohio. Pettersson’s 5-under 67 was the best round of day of the players who finished their second rounds.

Two Cincinnati, Ohio-born players sit inside the top 10 in a tie for third when play was suspended on Friday. Steve Flesch posted a second-round even-par 72 to sit at 6-under 138, while Brett Wetterich sits at 6-under through eight holes.

We will not find out until Saturday whether Jay Haas ties Tom Kite (590) for the most cuts made in a career on the PGA TOUR. Haas came into the tournament one behind Kite and also has a chance to make his 27th cut in 29 appearances at the Memorial Tournament. Haas teed off in the second-to-last group on Friday and was able to get just three holes before the horn was blown due to darkness. He sits at 1-under par in a tie for 26th.

Ryan Moore and Justin Rose, who were playing competitors on Friday, were disqualified for walking off the course prior to the round being suspended for the evening due to darkness.

When the first round was completed on Friday morning, just two players ended up playing bogey-free rounds -- Jerry Kelly and Tim Clark.

Steve Lowery and Chris Couch withdrew after the round was restarted at 4:34 p.m. They had played 12 and two holes, respectively, of their second rounds. John Daly withdrew prior to the second round after straining his back on the practice range. Shigeki Maruyama withdrew during the 15th hole on Friday to an injured shoulder, while Thomas Levet withdrew after 12 holes.
