BIRMINGHAM, Ala -- Hale Irwin, who made only one bogey through 36 holes, shot rounds of 68-70 to capture the Georgia-Pacific Grand Champions title at the Regions Charity Classic on Saturday. The Regions Charity Classic is the second of six Grand Champions events on the 2006 Champions Tour schedule. Irwin started the day with a two-shot lead over second-place finisher Jay Sigel at the Robert Trent Jones Trail at Ross Bridge in Birmingham, Ala., after a bogey-free 68 on Friday. Irwin’s sole bogey came at the second hole on Saturday, but he followed it up with three birdies to claim his second career Grand Champions title. As consistent as Irwin played, Sigel was the exact opposite, riding a rollercoaster of birdies and bogeys on his way to shooting back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish two shots behind Irwin. Sigel’s second round included seven birdies, five bogeys and only six pars. Sigel bogeyed his final two holes to ruin any chance of catching Irwin. John Jacobs finished in third place at two-under-par 142. Jim Dent, Vicente Fernandez and Mike Hill tied for fourth at one-under-par 143. Irwin earned $30,000 for the victory and leads the Grand Champions money list with $40,000 through two events. Mike McCullough won the Grand Champions money title last year with $119,267. The Georgia-Pacific Grand Champions competition features players age 60 and older vying for an additional purse and title at six selected Champions Tour events. Scores posted during the first two rounds of the tournament determine the Grand Champions winner. The 2006 Georgia-Pacific Grand Champions competition concludes with the Georgia-Pacific Grand Champions Championship, which will be held at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in suburban Atlanta, from Sept. 8-9. The Grand Champions play for weekly purses of $175,000, with $400,000 up for grabs at the Championship. The top 16 players on the 2006 Georgia-Pacific Grand Champions money list through the Commerce Bank Championship, plus two sponsors’ exemptions, will be eligible for the season-ending, 36-hole championship. Mike McCullough won last year’s Championship and its $85,000 first prize. Information on the Georgia-Pacific golf program is available at www.gp.com/golf. |
