FARMINGTON, Pa. -- Michelle Wie has received a sponsor's exemption to play in the 84 LUMBER Classic this fall.

Wie will play in the tournament in September at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa, 84 LUMBER spokesman Jeff Nobers said Friday. He noted that Wie's family has known 84 LUMBER president Maggie Hardy Magerko for several years.

Wie, 16, last played in a PGA TOUR event in July, 2005, missing the cut at the John Deere Classic by two strokes. She has a sponsor's exemption to compete in that tournament again this summer.

No woman has made the cut on the PGA TOUR since Babe Zaharias in 1945.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review first reported the news of Wie's exemption in the 84 LUMBER Classic on Friday.

The 84 LUMBER Classic, played at the resort about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was started by 84 LUMBER founder Joe Hardy, who poured millions into the tournament and tried to attract the biggest names in golf.
