Both Tom Kite (-10) and Andy Bean (-9) will each attempt to end significant dry spells tomorrow. Kite's last victory, his seventh on the Champions Tour, came at the 2004 3M Championship just over 19 months ago. He hasn't won on the Champions Tour in his last 30 events. Bean's last victory came at the 1986 Byron Nelson Golf Classic almost 20 years ago. He's gone 303 PGA TOUR events and 71 Champions Tour events without a victory. • The AT&T Classic does have a history of producing first-time winners. In the previous 16 events here in the Los Angeles area, seven players -- including last year's champion, Des Smyth -- picked up their first victories at this tournament. In addition to Smyth, the list includes John Brodie (1991), Jack Kiefer (1994), John Bland (1995), Gil Morgan (1996), Joe Inman (1998) and Tom Purtzer (2003). • Tom Kite's record on the Champions Tour when leading/co-leading heading into the final round is 5-for-12. The last time Kite held the lead going into the final round and went on to win was at the 2002 Napa Valley Championship. He's won eight times on TOUR in California (5-PGA TOUR, 3-Champions Tour) including twice in the Los Angeles area (1993 Nissan Open and 2002 SBC Senior Classic). • Tom Kite (2002) is attempting to become the first two-time winner here at Valencia and if successful tomorrow, would also join Joe Inman (1998, 1999, 2000) and Gil Morgan (1996, 1997, 2004) as a multiple AT&T Classic champion.
• Tom Kite's 8-under-par round was the fourth 64 shot in this event since it moved to Valencia Country Club. Larry Nelson (Round 2/2001), Walter Morgan (Round 3/2001) and Joe Inman (Round 3/2004) all had 64s. Kite's score of 29 on his final nine holes today matched the best back-nine score in tournament history (George Archer-1999/back nine/Round 2, Jim Dent-1993/back nine/Round 2, Dale Douglass-1994/back nine/Round 3) and was the lowest ever posted at Valencia. • Tom Kite's run of four birdies and an eagle (E-B-B-B-B) on Nos. 9-13 today is the best eagle/birdie streak on the Champions Tour this year and also matched the best eagle/birdie run on the circuit in each of the last three years. • Tom Kite has made three eagles over his first 36 holes. However, no previous winner of this event has ever made more than two (Dale Douglass, 1993 and Tom Purtzer, 2003). Homero Blancas (1992) and Jim Dent (1993) both had three eagles in this event. • In the previous 16 AT&T Classics, the player(s) leading or tied for the lead after two rounds has/have gone on to win only five times and only once at Valencia (Gil Morgan, 2004). • The winner of Sunday's event will earn a check for $240,000 and 240 Charles Schwab Cup points. Loren Roberts has grabbed the early lead in the season-long Schwab Cup competition with 814 points and has a chance to add onto his lead with a top-10 finish tomorrow. Don Pooley is currently in second with 309 points. Last year, Tom Watson won his second Charles Schwab Cup, nipping Dana Quigley by claiming the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, Calif. This year's Schwab Cup winner will receive a $1 million annuity. • Dave Stockton made the biggest move of the day, improving 34 places and eight shots from yesterday. Stockton's 3-under 69 vaulted him from a tie for 66th into a tie for 32nd. • Even though temperatures only reached the mid-40s and the wind chill was in the 30s for most of the day, Saturday's scoring average was slightly lower (73.077) than Friday (73.615). A total of 10 players had rounds in the 60s today compared with eight sub-70 scores yesterday. There were 24 rounds under par today compared to 23 yesterday. • The most difficult hole on Saturday was the par-4 No. 6 with a scoring average of 4.449. The hole yielded just three birdies (Mark McNulty, Fuzzy Zoeller, Dave Eichelberger). • Princess Cruises will award a cruise for two to the professional that is closest to the pin on the par-3 16th hole tomorrow. • Tomorrow's final round gets under way at 10:00 a.m. (PT) with at two-tee start. |
