Ben Crenshaw’s 4-under 68 Friday was his first round ever in the 60s at Valencia Country Club in 12 scores posted. Crenshaw’s previous-best round at this venue was a 2-under 70 on the final day of the 2004 event. His best finish at Valencia was a tie for 27th in 2004. • Mitch Adcock, an open qualifier on Monday with a 3-under 69, holds the opening-round lead after posting a 5-under 67 at Valencia Country Club on Friday. Adcock open qualified earlier this year at the Turtle Bay Championship and finished in a tie for 67th in Hawaii. A veteran of the PGA TOUR from Macon, Mississippi, Adcock finished in a tie for 43rd in the Champions Tour’s National Qualifying Tournament last fall. John Bland won this event as an open qualifier in 1995 when it was known as the Ralphs Senior Classic and played at Wilshire Country Club. • Jay Sigel’s 4-under 68 matched his best score at Valencia Country Club (second round/2004). His best finish since the event moved to this course in 2001 is a T33 in 2004. • Defending champion Des Smyth opened with two consecutive bogeys but rallied to card a 3-under-par 69. • Tom Purtzer, the 2003 champion at Valencia, was the only player in the field who didn’t make a bogey and posted a 3-under-par 69.
• Loren Roberts, the January/February Player of the Month on the Champions Tour, posted a 1-under 71, his 13th straight par/better round on the circuit this year. • Gil Morgan, a three-time winner of this event and the all-time leading money-winner in tournament history, shot 3-under 69 Friday, his 18th round in the 60s at this event out of 30 played. It was also Morgan’s 23rd sub-par round. • Don Pooley’s 7-over 79 Friday ended his streak of par or better rounds this year on the Champions Tour at nine consecutive. • The wildest round of the day belonged to Lanny Wadkins. Wadkins made five birdies, an eagle and seven pars and shot a 1-under 71. • Even though high temperatures reached only the upper-40s and winds gusted in the afternoon, Friday’s scoring average of 73.615 was almost two strokes lower than the opening-round average last year (75.494). There were eight rounds in the 60s Friday compared to just one on Friday last year (Isao Aoki/69). The hardest hole of the day was the par-4 2nd hole (4.410), yielding just two birdies (Jim Thorpe and Mark Johnson). • Saturday’s second round gets under way with a two-tee start beginning at 10:00 a.m. (PST). |
