South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini continued his stellar start to the 2006 season. He now has 14 rounds in the 60s (out of 23) on the season and has been par or better in 20 of those rounds. He was tied for second here in 2002, just one stroke behind Len Mattiace. • The cut came at 1-over-par 143 with 83 players advancing to weekend play. • The first round came to an end at 8:24 a.m. on Friday morning after having been suspended the night before due to darkness at 5:50 p.m. • This is Rory Sabbatini’s third second-round lead of his TOUR career. The last one came during the 2003 FBR Capital Open in Potomac, Maryland, an event he went on to win. His last lead on TOUR was the first round of the 2006 Sony Open in Hawaii, where he finished second. • Brian Gay had the season’s first double eagle on Friday morning, recording a two on the par-five first hole. Gay hit driver, 5-iron from 194 yards to record the albatross. • Trevor Immelman had the season’s third ace when he holed a 7-iron from 164 yards on the 16th hole on Friday morning. • The last time a double eagle and an ace were recorded in the same day on TOUR occurred during the first round of the 2004 British Open. Gary Evans had the double eagle and Ernie Els had the ace. • Stephen Ames was DQ’d this morning when he missed his tee time. Tommy Armour III withdrew after nine holes today due to suffering with the flu. • When the first round was completed this morning, the scoring average for the first round was 70.868 -- that’s the third lowest first round average at Riviera since the TOUR starting keeping such statistics during the 1984 season. • The scoring average between rounds one and two jumped 1.345 higher with round two finishing with a scoring average of 72.213. • There were four players with bogey-free rounds on Friday -- Paul Stankowski, Bob Tway, Thomas Levet and Tim Clark. Stankowski carries the longest current streak with 29 holes without a bogey. • The PGA TOUR had not experienced rain at a tournament since the Sony Open in Hawaii in week two of the 2006 season. • Led by tournament leader Rory Sabbatini, three players from South Africa are among the top 10 heading into the weekend. Trevor Immelman (tied for fourth) and Tim Clark (tied for fourth) are the other two. Ernie Els of South Africa won this event back in 1999 and six of the last 10 Nissan Open’s have been won by international players. • Tiger Woods made the cut on the number for the fifth time in his career.
