The first round was suspended due to darkness at 5:50 p.m. local time (8:50 p.m. EST). It was just the second round to not be completed in the first seven events of the 2006 season. The other was the first round of the FBR Open. There were eight players left on the course to complete their first round, which they will resume at 8:00 a.m. on Friday. The second round will still begin at 7:00 a.m. on schedule. • This is the 80th playing of the Nissan Open. Outside of the Major Championships, the tournament is the fourth oldest event on the PGA TOUR (Cialis Western Open-1899, Bell Canadian Open-1904 and Valero Texas Open-1922). • Fred Couples is playing in his 25th consecutive Nissan Open this week (1982-2006). The two-time winner (1990, 1992) of the tournament is off to a good start with a 5-under 66 in the first round. He is looking to make his 23rd cut and post his 12th top-10 finish here. • Two former champions are sitting inside the top five after 18 holes -- Fred Couples (1990, 1992) and Billy Mayfair (1998) are tied for third. • Tiger Woods is making his 11th appearance (nine as a professional and two as an amateur) in the Nissan Open and is still seeking his first title here. It marks the longest stretch he has played in any one tournament on the PGA TOUR without a victory. After missing the cut as an amateur in 1992 and 1993, he has accumulated eight straight top-20 showings, including runner-up finishes in 1998 and 1999.
• The two members of last year’s playoff -- winner Adam Scott and runner-up Chad Campbell -- were both off to nice starts in Thursday’s first round. Campbell posted a 4-under 67 to sit in a tie for seventh, while Scott posted a 3-under 68 and sits in a tie for 16th. • Co-leader Justin Rose holds a lead at the end of a round for the seventh time in his PGA TOUR career and for the third time after the first round. His last lead on TOUR was a third-round lead at the 2005 Buick Championship which resulted in a third-place finish. • Justin Rose’s opening-round 64 was one off his career-best, which he has done three times, most recently during the second round of the 2005 Buick Championship. • Co-leader Dean Wilson is sharing his first opening-round lead on the PGA TOUR and his third lead of any kind on TOUR. Wilson previously held/shared second-round leads at the 2004 and 2005 Valero Texas Opens prior to finishing 7th and tied for third, respectively. • Any advantage to co-leaders Justin Rose and Dean Wilson, might lean towards England’s Rose as six of the last eight winners of the Nissan Open have been international winners -- Nick Faldo (1997), Ernie Els (1999), Robert Allenby (2001), Mike Weir (2003, 2004) Adam Scott (2005). • South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini continued his stellar start to the 2006 season. Entering the week, he had finished inside the top 20 in all five of his starts, including two runner-up finishes at the Sony Open in Hawaii (tie for second) and last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Including a 4-under 67 during Thursday’s first round at Riviera Country Club, Sabbatini has posted 19 of his 22 rounds at par or better to start the season. His three top-10s equal his total top-10 output for the 2005 season and in five starts he has already earned $345,306 more than he did the previous season. Sabbatini has just one top-10 in six previous starts at the Nissan Open, a tie for second in 2002. • There were seven bogey-free rounds at Riviera CC during round one -- Justin Rose, Dean Wilson, Olin Browne, Doug Barron in the morning and Corey Pavin, Arron Oberholser and Scott Verplank in the afternoon. • Patrick Sheehan withdrew prior to the start of the first round due to a left neck/shoulder injury. He was replaced by Shane Bertsch. |
