Phil Mickelson broke the streak of missed cuts for the defending champion at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am at four. In danger of becoming the fifth consecutive defending champion at AT&T to miss the cut, Mickelson went out and posted a 5-under-par 67 at Pebble Beach Golf Links. During one stretch, Mickelson posted five birdies in six holes (Nos. 4-10). The last four defending champions at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am have missed the cut. Vijay Singh in 2005, Davis Love III in 2002 and 2004 and Matt Gogel in 2003. The last player to win and make the cut the following year prior to Mickelson was Tiger Woods, the 2000 champion. Woods finished tied for 13th the year he was defending his title. • The six-stroke cushion by Mike Weir and Arron Oberholser is the largest shared lead for two players since the second event of the 2006 season, where David Toms and Chad Campbell led the field by seven strokes at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Toms went on to win the event. • The 54-hole leaders Mike Weir and Arron Oberholser have the opportunity to do what just two champions have done since the AT&T rotation brought in Poppy Hills Golf Club -- post all four rounds in the 60s, joining Mark O'Meara (1997) and Vijay Singh (2004). Rory Sabbatini (T4) also has the opportunity to post all four rounds in the 60s. • Phil Mickelson (T11) has the opportunity to post his fourth top-10 in four starts with a top-10 finish this week. In two previous years, Mickelson has begun a PGA TOUR season with three or more top-10s -- 1994 (3) and 2004 (5). • Scoring average for the week on three courses: Course Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Pebble Beach Golf Links 71.133 72.300 72.817 Spyglass Hill 70.483 72.467 73.103 Poppy Hills 70.983 72.492 73.433 • The 1995 champion Peter Jacobsen made his 21st cut in 27 starts at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and sits tied for 43rd heading into Sunday's final round. • Only four players since 1970 have earned their first TOUR victory at Pebble Beach: John Cook (1981), Steve Jones (1988), Brett Ogle (1993) and Matt Gogel (2002). Along with Arron Oberholser, six others in the top-10 are looking for their maiden TOUR win -- Nick Watney, Brian Davis, Harrison Frazar, Tim Clark, Daniel Chopra and Mark Wilson. • There were no bogey-free rounds on Saturday. • The cut came at 3-under par (the cut was 4-under par last year) with 67 players advancing to play in the final round on Sunday. The low 60 players and ties make the cut this week and will play on Sunday, but the low 70 players and ties (78 players) will earn paychecks. From the pro-am portion of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am the top 25 teams will also play in Sunday's final round. • Five times the professional winner has also won the pro-am portion of the event. Fuzzy Zoeller in 1986 was the last AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am winner to also collect the pro-am title. The others include Johnny Miller (1974), Johnny Potts (1968), Art Wall (1959) and Sam Snead (1937). |
