He had previously shot rounds of 64 three times -- most recently in the third round of the 2004 EDS Byron Nelson Championship. • Last year's runner-up Mike Weir (Pebble Beach) posted his best round of the year with a 9-under-par 63. The 63 was his best round since a 10-under-par 63 in the second round of the 2005 Mercedes Chamionships. Weir has a tie for fifth finish (Bob Hope Chrysler Classic) and two missed cuts in three starts in 2006. • Arron Oberholser (Poppy Hills) continued his fine play at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, posting a 7-under-par 65. Oberholser has posted two consecutive top-10s at the AT&T event. • Mike Weir has five top-10s in his last six starts at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, including a runner-up to Phil Mickelson in 2005. • Despite three bogeys and a double-bogey, defending champion Phil Mickelson (Poppy Hills) posted a 5-under-par 67 on Thursday. Mickelson finished his round with two birdies (Nos. 16-17) and an eagle (No. 18). • Eight past champions of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am are competing this week: Vijay Singh (2004), Davis Love III (2001 and 2003), Matt Gogel (2002), Phil Mickelson (1998 and 2005), Mark O'Meara (1997, 1992, 1990, 1989 and 1985), Peter Jacobsen (1995), Paul Azinger (1991) and Steve Jones (1988). • There were eight players with bogey-free rounds on Thursday -- Luke Donald (Spyglass Hill), Michael Allen (Spyglass Hill), Nick Watney (Pebble Beach), Charles Warren (Spyglass Hill), Greg Chalmers (Spyglass Hill), Willie Wood (Spyglass Hill), Jerry Smith (Spyglass Hill) and Mike Hulbert (Spyglass Hill). • Of the 180 players in the field, 107 broke par during Thursday's first round. • Nick Watney (Pebble Beach) led the field with only 22 putts on Thursday as he carded a 7-under-par 65. • J.L. Lewis (Poppy Hill) was perfect (18 of 18) in the Greens in Regulation department in posting a 5-under-par 67. • TOUR rookie Bill Haas and his father, Jay Haas, are competing in the same grouping this week. Playing Thursday at Pebble Beach, Bill posted a 3-over-par 75 while Jay shot a 3-under-par 69. • D.J. Trahan (Spyglass Hill) led the field with two eagles on Thursday en route to a 3-under-par 69. |
