• Mark Calcavecchia has played in each of the previous 19 FBR Opens at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale. He’s won three times and has nine top-10 finishes. He’s made 15 cuts and is 162-under par for his 68 rounds at the course, including a then PGA TOUR record 256 total at the 2001 FBR Open. •Three players have shot 60 at the TPC of Scottsdale — Grant Waite, Calcavecchia and Phil Mickelson. The only other course in TOUR history to witness three 60s was Brackenridge Park, the old home of the Valero Texas Open. Those scores were shot by Al Brosch, Ted Kroll and Mike Souchak. • Phil Mickelson has won the FBR Open twice. It’s one of nine events in which he has more than one win. Seven of those tournaments are located in the western part of the U.S. •One more on Mickelson: He loves Arizona. Not only did he attend Arizona State, but he has five wins in the state — three Chrysler Classic of Tucson titles and two FRB Open titles. •How hard was the South Course at last week’s Buick Invitational? It played to a stroke average of 73.690 — more than four strokes harder than the North Course which played to a stroke average of 69.455. •Here’s another indication of the difference in difficulty between the two courses at the Buick Invitational. There were 17 10-stroke or more swings from one day to the next during last week’s event. •All four winners this year — Stuart Appleby, David Toms, Chad Campbell and Tiger Woods — are in their 30s. |
