• Arjun Atwal tied the PGA TOUR record with three eagles in his round on Friday at the North Course, becoming the 17th player in TOUR history to perform the feat and the first since Kevin Stadler at the 2005 Michelin Championship at Las Vegas. Atwal began his round on No. 10, and posted eagles on the par-5 14th hole, the par-4 16th hole and the par-5 18th hole. He went on to shoot a 5-under 67 to pull within five shots of the lead. • First-round co-leader Brandt Jobe moved into the outright lead at 12-under-par 132 after posting a 5-under 67 on the Torrey Pines South Course on Friday. It is the fourth time he has held/shared a second-round lead in his nine years on the PGA TOUR (2001 Southern Farm Bureau Classic/tied for 28th, 1999 Air Canada Championship/tied for 48th, 1991 Buick Southern Open/tied for 11th). • Jobe currently holds a two-stroke advantage over Tim Clark (66/NC) and Jesper Parnevik (67/NC). First-round co-leader Thomas Levet shot a 1-over 73 at the South Course to fall six shots off the pace. • The leader/co-leader after 36 holes has won two of the first three tournaments of the season (Stuart Appleby at the Mercedes Championships and Chad Campbell at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic). • Tim Clark jumped into contention with a 6-under-par 66 at the North Course on Friday. Clark is fresh off of his best season on TOUR, finishing No. 21 on the money list in 2005 with over $2.3 million in earnings. The 2005 President’s Cup International Team member is making his third start at the Buick Invitational (12th/2003, missed cut/2004).
• After opening with 1-under-par 71s, three-time Buick Invitational champions Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both jumped into the top 25 on Friday. Mickelson’s 5-under 67 at the North Course moved him to tied for 12th and six strokes back, while Woods’ 4-under 68 at the South Course moved him to tied for 22nd and seven shots back. Each player is seeking to become the tournament’s first ever four-time champion. • The round of the day on the North Course was turned in by Ryan Palmer with a 10-under-par 62, just one shy of the tournament record 61 by Mark Brooks in 1990. The round propelled the 2004 FUNAI Classic at WALT DISNEY WORLD Resort champion to a tied for 12th. The round of the day on the South Course was turned in by tournament leader Brandt Jobe with a 5-under-par 67. • The South Course scoring average of 74.286 was the highest for a round since the course was lengthened in 2002. The second highest was 74.205 during the first round of the 2003 event.
Current Scoring Averages for each course: • Of the 41 top rounds on Friday, 37 were posted on the North Course, with the only exceptions being Brandt Jobe (67/first), Sergio Garcia (68/tied for fifth), Tiger Woods (68/tied for 22nd) and Steve Lowery (69/fourth). The scoring average at the North Course was 5.132 lower than the scoring average on the South Course. • The cut came at 1-under-par 143 with 82 players making it to the weekend to compete for the $5.1 million purse. • TOUR rookie Nathan Green continues to shine in his rookie season. After finishing fifth at the Sony Open in Hawaii in his first start as a rookie, he is currently tied for fifth heading into the weekend at Torrey Pines Golf Course. Green currently leads the 24 rookies who teed it up this week, and is one of 11 to make the cut. • Speaking of rookies, Matt Hansen made the cut in his first PGA TOUR start this week thanks to a 6-under 66 at the North Course to move to 3-under 141. Nicholas Thompson (tied for 52nd/-2) and Daisuke Maruyama (tied for 67th/-1) posted the first cut of their careers this week in their third start. TOUR rookie Bubba Watson made his second cut of the season in as many starts. He followed up Thursday’s even-par 72 with a 2-under 70 at the South Course. Watson finished in fourth place in his first start of the season at the Sony Open in Hawaii. • All nine bogey-free rounds came on the North Course on Friday (Frank Lickliter II, Tom Lehman, Marco Dawson, Carl Pettersson, Luke Donald, Chad Campbell, Shigeki Maruyama, Chris Smith and Matt Hansen). For the week, there have been 21 bogey-free rounds, with Carlos Franco (first round) providing the only one on the South Course. • Fred Couples posted two eagles during his 6-under 66 at the North Course. Couples moved to 4-under 140 (tied for 30th), resulting in his 16th made cut in 18 starts at the Buick Invitational. • Chris Riley (69/tied for 67th) equaled the best birdie streak of the season with five in a row on Nos. 15-1 on the North Course. • Ben Crane withdrew from the tournament following the first round with a back injury. |
