Pat Perez seized the first-round lead at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic with a career-low 12-under-par 60 at the Palmer Course at PGA West, just one shy of the course record of 59 set by David Duval during the final round in 1999. Perez hit 11 of 13 fairways and 16 of 18 greens during the round, and needed only 22 putts.

The previous best opening-round score at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic was an 11-under-par 61 by David Edwards at Indian Wells CC in 1987.

Perez’ bogey-free effort, which included 12 birdies, tops his previous low rounds on TOUR at the 2003 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic (61/2nd round), 2002 Valero Texas Open (62/2nd round), 2004 Valero Texas Open (63/3rd round) and the 2002 Bell Canadian Open (63/4th round).

Perez will be seeking to become the first first-round leader to go on to victory at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic since Kenny Perry did so in 1995.

Chad Campbell fired a 9-under-par 63 at Bermuda Dunes Country Club to hold sole possession of second place -- three shots behind Perez. Campbell has now fired 15 of 16 rounds below par at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Campbell now has rounds of 62 and 63 among his first five rounds of the season, having shot a 62 during the third round of last week’s Sony Open in Hawaii, where he finished in a tie for second.

Three left-handers are off to hot starts this week - Phil Mickelson (66/La Quinta/tied for seventh), Steve Flesch (67/Bermuda Dunes/tied for 11th) and Mike Weir (67/Bermuda Dunes/tied for 11th).

David Duval (69/PGA West) was one of 11 players to post bogey-free rounds during round one -- Palmer Course at PGA West (Pat Perez, Tom Pernice Jr., Andrew Magee, Duval), Bermuda Dunes CC (Chad Campbell, Joe Ogilvie, Richard S. Johnson), La Quinta Country Club (Harrison Frazar) and the Classic Club (Kevin Sutherland, Billy Mayfair, Mark Calcavecchia).

There are 13 past champions in this year’s tournament, including Justin Leonard (2005), Mike Weir (2003), Phil Mickelson (2002, 2004), Joe Durant (2001), Jesper Parnevik (2000), David Duval (1999), Fred Couples (1998), John Cook (1992, 1997), Mark Brooks (1996), Corey Pavin (1987, 1991), Steve Jones (1989), Donnie Hammond (1986) and Keith Fergus (1983). Among those players, three are currently located inside the top 20 -- Mickelson (tied for seventh), Leonard (tied for 11th) and Weir (tied for 11th).

Defending champion Justin Leonard opened up with a 5-under-par 67 at Bermuda Dunes CC. He has now posted 27 of his last 31 rounds in the 60s dating back to the 2000 tournament. Leonard is seeking to become just the second player in the 47-year history of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic to defend his title, joining Johnny Miller who performed the feat in 1975-76. Of his 10 career TOUR wins, Leonard has only won the same tournament multiple times once, the Valero Texas Open, which he won in 2000-01.

Speaking of Leonard, he has never missed a cut at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in eight previous appearances (1995-96, 2000-05) and has three top-10s in the last four years with his win in 2005, a tie for eighth in 2003 and a tie for sixth in 2002.

Bill Haas (tied for 22nd) led the seven rookies in this week’s field with an opening-round 4-under 68 at Bermuda Dunes CC. The other rookies include David McKenzie (69/Bermuda Dunes/tied for 37th), Nicholas Thompson (70/PGA West/tied for 55th), Troy Matteson (73/Classic Club/tied for 101st), Jon Mills (73/Classic Club/tied for 101st), J.B. Holmes (74/Classic Club/tied for 110th) and Steven Bowditch (79/PGA West, 128th).

Lucas Glover (66/PGA West/tied for seventh) is the only player among the top 21 players following the first round who is playing the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic for the first time. The last time a first-time participant went on to win was Donnie Hammond in 1986. Bill Rogers (1978) and Tom Nieporte (1967) are the other first-timers to win the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

100 of the 128 players posted par or better scores on Wednesday.

Scoring averages during Wednesday’s first round and the top round at each course: Classic Club -- 71.031 -- Joey Sindelar (5-under 67) Palmer Course at PGA West -- 69.969 -- Pat Perez (12-under 60) La Quinta CC -- 70.656 -- Steve Elkington (8-under 64) Bermuda Dunes CC -- 68.938 -- Chad Campbell (9-under 63)

Each of the four courses had one hole on Wednesday which did not yield an over-par score. They include the par-5 14th hole at the Classic Club (21 birdies, 11 pars), par-4 eighth hole at the Palmer Course at PGA West (10 birdies, 22 pars), par-5 sixth hole at La Quinta CC (15 birdies, 17 pars) and the par-5 first hole at Bermuda Dunes CC (4 eagles, 18 birdies, 10 pars).
