PGATOUR.com's TOURCast wins 2005 Emmy Award

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL -- PGATOUR.com, the official site of the PGA TOUR, has won the Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in the category of Advanced Media Technology for the Enhancement of Original Television Content for its interactive application, TOURCast.

PGA TOUR Vice President of New Media, Paul Johnson and team members were on hand to accept the award at the 57th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards last evening in Princeton, NJ, hosted by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).

“This is an honor. The award really is a testament to the hard work of every one of our team members and our great partners in this endeavor, IBM and Sportvision,” said Paul Johnson. “TOURCast is a world-class interactive application that provides graphical coverage of all the action from PGA TOUR tournaments, including every shot, every hole, and every player. It is a compelling fan enhancement for the entire tournament, and especially powerful as a companion and complement to the TV coverage. It adds great depth and interactivity to the fan experience.”

The other finalists were DirectTV Sports Mix from DirectTV and 2005 TV Land Awards, All Access Pass from TV Land, Nick at Nite and Zetools.

Exclusively at PGATOUR.com, TOURCast allows fans to see a visual representation of exact shots and locations of every hole and player. Fans can follow their favorite players live, analyze a hole or a player’s performance, compare players head-to-head, or replay any action they may have missed from an earlier round or tournament.

“You can choose to follow Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh or any of your favorite players, shot by shot,” Johnson said. “You’ll see that Tiger’s tee shot went 315 yards into the left rough and is exactly 167 yards from the pin.”

“TOURCast illustrates the vision for the ShotLink data -- to turn expanded data into information, information into knowledge, and knowledge into entertainment.” said Steve Evans, PGA TOUR Vice President of Information Systems.

TOURCast was developed and implemented by a small project team comprised of PGA TOUR Staff, IBM, and Sportvision. TOURCast is hosted by IBM’s On Demand Virtual Linux Services, which provides PGATOUR.com the flexibility and scale to efficiently handle the peak demands of the golf audience. ShotLink is the PGA TOUR’s official scoring system, also developed in partnership with IBM.

“It is an outstanding example of working with best of breed partners like IBM and Sportvision to develop a truly innovative application,” Evans said.

This is the third year that the Academy has honored the work being done in Interactive Television, New Media and related programming and technology.
